Is Weight Loss Surgery Worth It?

By Teve Torbes Weight loss surgery is a growing new trend - called gastrointestinal surgery, this procedure has been around since the late 1950's but has grown in popularity in recent years. Essentially, the stomach is drastically reduced in size using various techniques. After this reduction, the person is unable to eat that much at a time - this can result in dramatic weight loss, usually averaging about twenty percent in the next two years. But the big question is, is it worth it? There are significant health costs associated with both being obese and with having the surgery. On the one hand, being obese can cause you to have serious heart problems along with health problems in general. On the other, there is a significant risk of death associated with even having the weight loss surgery - the older you get, the higher it is. This doesnt even account for the risk of non-fatal side effects, such as infection, vomiting, ulcers, and nutrient deficiency. Many of these dont even occur until ten years or so after the surgery. Ultimately, the health risks probably arent worth it - no matter how much you weigh, there are other, less invasive ways to get rid of the weight. People try to rationalize the surgery as getting rid of the health problems of obesity, but these are gradual and often can be avoided with regular exercise, even if you remain obese despite the workout. You need to take a good, hard look at the reasons why you are getting this surgery. Making Friends - First Impressions

By Sharon Jacobsen If you've ever been for a job interview or even on a first date, you've no doubt heard plenty of advice about first impressions and how much they matter. What about when you're meeting potential friends for the first time? Keeping in mind that just about anybody, from a new neighbour to the lady behind at the check-out in the supermarket can be a potential friend, first impressions are equally as important when you're just out and about, going about your daily life. When we first meet a new person our sub-conscious mind automatically starts computing a variety of signals from which we draw our conclusions. No doubt you've met people and immediately felt uncomfortable with them. But, if asked, you wouldn't be able to say why you didn't like that particular person there's just something you can't quite put your finger on. The same goes with those we immediately feel comfortable with. Our minds are simply sending us the answer to a complicated equation; an answer we don't always fully understand. It's important to remember that we've only between seven and seventeen seconds of interaction before the other person will form an opinion. Although later deeds may help them re-evaluate their stance, nothing will entirely eradicate the first feelings they had about you. When it comes to first impressions, second chances simply don't exist. So how do we make a good first impression? The first rule, and this really is a golden rule, is to immediately give the 'spotlight' to the other person. Everybody likes to feel that they're the centre of attention and when making a good first impression, giving them the starring role is paramount to success. Just think of the times you've met somebody who talked about herself non-stop. How did you feel? Did you want to spend more time with her or did you avoid her like the plague? My guess is the latter. Whether or not the other person will make equally as a good a first impression on you will also depend on how they react to your giving them this central role. If they take it and keep running, they'll no doubt become boring the 'conversation baton' should be handed back and forth, giving each part an equal opportunity to speak about themselves. Listen to what she says. It's no use giving the other person the spotlight if you're not going to listen to what she's saying. Don't interrupt but do make the right sounds and motions to show that you're interested in what she's saying. Short sentences like: "so what happened next?" or "and did you enjoy it?" are acceptable to lead the conversation forward but whatever you do, don't say "funnily enough, I had a similar situation where..." and take the baton away from her by launching into your own story. By all means let her know you understand her through your own similar experience as this will give her a good opportunity to hand the central role back to you but let her choose the moment for the handover. To be a good listener it's also important to maintain eye contact. Nobody enjoys talking to somebody who's constantly looking around them as though waiting for somebody more interesting to come along. Give her your full attention. Avoid 'foot in mouth' syndrome. Humour is fine if you know how to use it but when making first impressions it's probably best avoided unless you're absolutely certain you won't stray into personal territory. Obviously, the odd quip is acceptable but making 'funny' remarks about specific social groups and situations to somebody you don't know may well prove to be hurtful. Regardless of how innocent the joke was, if you hurt the other person's sensitivities you might just as well walk right away as any future relationship will be either out of the question or very strained indeed. Don't correct the other person. Nobody wants to be friends with an argumentative person, do they? With that in mind, make sure the other person doesn't wrongly judge you by biting your tongue even if somebody says something that's totally against your own beliefs or that you know to be wrong. Some people find confrontations difficult to handle regardless of how long they've known a person - for those who've just met another person, it can and probably will be damning to any potential relationship that may have developed. Make yourself understood. Shy people have a tendency to mumble when they speak, as though what they have to say is unimportant and doesn't need to be heard. If you're talking to another person, for whatever reason, then obviously you have something to say that should be heard, even if it's just "what's the price of a loaf of bread?" or "I'm sorry, I'm late and must dash." You won't make a good first impression if the other person can't understand you. Remember those seven to seventeen seconds? How many of them do you think you'll have used just by having to repeat what you said? Mumbling is simply a waste of precious first impression time. Others will also form opinions of you based on the way you speak. Within those first crucial seconds they will have judged your level of intelligence, your cultural background, your level of education and more. Just think how you differently you'd judge a person who said "What? I didn't hear you" to a person who said "I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch what you said." Which of the two you'd feel most comfortable with is irrelevant, the example is simply to identify the way we make our judgements. Using the above rules should help you feel more confident in social situations where you interact with new people. By developing these skills you'll soon find that making friends will become easier and that you'll at least be on "passing the time of day" terms with far more people than you ever were before. Judaism Purified by the Messiah Will Save the World, said Hashem

By Karen Fish According to Hashem, through the Biblical Prophets in the Holy Bible, the job of the Messiah upon his return will be to purify Judaism and the Holy Bible. According to Adonai through the Biblical Prophets in the Holy Bible the arrival of the Messiah will be accompanied by great signs of Biblical proportions. Elohim said through the Biblical Prophet Malachi, "See I am sending my Messenger (Messiah) to prepare the way before me, and the Lord who you seek will suddenly come to his Temple. The Messenger of the covenant in whom you delight indeed he is coming." (Malachi 3:1). The covenant is the contract between man and God, the second commandment carved in stone by the Lord, in which man promises to live by Gods 10 commandments and in return God promises to bless mankind for thousands of generations. God also vows to punish the people who fail to follow his 10 commandments and their children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. The Lord said that he was sending his Messiah (Messenger) to His Temple, The Messenger of the Covenant, to refine the Bibles, to rid them of their impurities. God said that The Messiah would scrub the 2 tablets carved in stone by God, God's stone table, off with soap and shrink and clean your Holy Bible down with fuller's soap, back down to God's 10 commandments. (Malachi 3:5-6). A fuller is one who shrinks and thickens wool with moisture, heat and pressure. God calls his 2 tablets a protective wall, and he called the Holy Bibles human contamination of His protective wall. God vowed to wash away the contamination by breaking down the contaminated human wall, levee, with a deluge of rain, a stormy wind and great hailstones and God vowed to kill those people within the wall Hurricane Katrina. God says, Who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiners fire and like fullers soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi, (Moses, who carved the second set of the 10 commandments on Mount Sinai), and refine them (the Jewish people), like gold and silver. (Malachi 3:2-3). God says, "Put me, my word, my 10 commandments, to the test. See if I will not open the windows of Heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.") (Malachi 3:10). Hashem through every Biblical Prophet said that when the Messiah came he would wash away the impurities placed onto Gods table, onto Gods protective wall, God's 2 stone tablets, with large rocks of hail, (the breaking off of the Antarctic Iceberg and 30% of the Arctic Icecap and Greenland, Gigantic Icebergs, which is now happening), and a destroying tempest, and a storm of mighty overflowing waters, (The Tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina knocking down the Levee, the contaminated man made wall). All human beings, including Jewish people, are composed of water, earth and air. In general this is usually done for entirely new product category or anticipating the introduction of a new product that substantially changes the competitive landscape in which customers are already familiar (for example, I would suspect that the new premium chewing-gum category that has emerged in the last 18 months might have upset the conventional wisdom of analysts in that industry). Conducting this type of market research can be expensive, so the best place to start is usually by evaluating the off-the-shelf syndicated market research reports that are available for any market of a reasonable size. Sizing a market is almost always a quantitative market research study, although depending on the market specifics its possible that there might be a qualitative lead-in activity or even a qualitative follow-up to get more details on a specific portion of the market. Product Concept Development Product concept market research is typically designed to provide customer input to help product-marketing managers develop products that more directly meet the needs of the target customer. Typically there are tradeoffs involving ease of use, price, industrial design decisions and bundling options. For the product marketing manager, conducting market research allows them an opportunity to get feedback from the group who is actually going to decide whether theyll pay the bills or not, the customer. Product concept market research can be done either qualitatively or quantitatively. Creating a customer profile often includes collecting the following: Demographics (age, title, physical city of location), Firmographics (company industry, number of employees, decision making structure around the product category being studies) and A number of questions about the particular product was purchased, how it was being used, what product it replaced, the number of people using it In many cases, customer-profiling research becomes the bible as a product development team makes decisions about what features or capabilities would be desired and which other ones would be passed over. Positioning Research - Positioning research is often closely related to branding market research, as its function is to understand the positioning of one product relative to another. Having a portfolio buy-up strategy, which calls out the benefits of the next product, without saying derogoratory about the product just down the line, is a challenging task, but thats where positioning research really shines. Messaging Research Messaging research is very closely related to advertising research, although it tests the most basic concepts of an advertising campaign the most basic idea that is believed to be the primary motivator for a product. As an example, what do you see when you notice a Rolex advertisement? Do they tout the increased accuracy of a Rolex watch over others? Do they talk about how much more shock resistant a Rolex is than another watch? Do they talk about how much deeper in the ocean a SCUBA diver can go with a Rolex than another watch? No, they dont message on any of these points, instead when you go to their website they show handsome people directing their million dollar yachts through rough seas, they show close-ups of the meticulously detailed watches, they show brave men, obviously risking their lives, climbing to the top of a snowy, distant peak. Their messaging is about living the good life and being ready for any adventure whether youre made of that stuff or not as though having a watch that costs tens of thousands of dollars puts you just a little bit closer to intrepid. At the crux of messaging market research is, what are the few things that we should emphasize if were fortunate enough to get a few seconds of consideration from a potential customer? Messaging market research is about finding the blend of unique capabilities or attributes of our product and framing that in a way that makes sense to the people who are somewhat inclined to purchase our product. Messaging research tends to be qualitative because non-verbal communication is an enormous part of communication and many people want to be able to read the respondents as they first try to digest our schpeel. Industrial Design Industrial Design (or ID as it is more typically called) typically refers to the shape, feel and texture of a product. You could say that the ID of the RAZR phone is a big hit, big enough that other companies are quickly copying it. ID research is focused on understanding what effect the industrial design may play in the purchase of a certain category of product, and how to optimize a product's industrial design for the target audience. If we all own the same products, it appears that ID is becoming one of the fundamental ways that companies are trying to differentiate products that are otherwise quite similar. ID market research has generally considered best handled in face-to-face qualitative research (often in-depth-interviews with one person at a time). However online capabilities have increased significantly in the last several years and there is a reasonable case for conducting ID research on a web site. While these customers may all be purchasing the same products, because they have different perspectives, theyre responses to product changes could be entirely different, so its a good idea to understand how large your groups, or segments are, and how theyll likely respond to the changes that youre company is considering. This is a type of market research that generally ends with a large quantitative bang. Segmentation research can be quite simple understanding how customers in the Eastern part of the country dress compared to those down South, or it can involve very high-end statistical analytics that can be very costly. However, good customer segmentation can greatly improve a companies product development and target customer efforts. Channel Research - This research can take a number of forms depending on the critical business issue. Channel research can be conducted to understand how a company's channel partners are ACTUALLY behaving, as opposed to how it's believed that they're behaving. Channel research can be conducted to understand what is motivating channel partners, or to understand whether a new channel partner that is being considered would be an appropriate choice for a certain product category. This is a very broad category of possible research methods that can span from efforts such as mystery shoppers who walk through a typical customer process and report back on the experience, to price checks or product offering reports. Price Elasticity - Remember back to Economics 101. As the price of a product increases the marginal value decreases (fair disclosure - I'm not sure that I actually passed EC101) and at some price-point the customers choose an alternative product. This research is designed to understand where that point is for different types of customers. Price elasticity market research really needs to be quantitative although there are times when an initial phase of qualitative research to understand the critical features and attributes may make sense. Pricing research is also very difficult to do because theres the monopoly money syndrome people tend to make different decisions with a theoretical exercise than they do when the money comes out of their pocket. Price elasticity research really needs to be well planned becuase there are number of seemingly insignificant but very important details to make decision on.
