By Annette Bridges Many people who know my daughter have asked me how she is handling life as a military spouse. My daughter has long been a planner and has not always responded well to an idea that required her to change her plans suddenly. Three years ago she married a young man six days before he began his Air Force career. And since that time, her life has been full of many changes. Some expected. And some not. This past fall was our son-in-law's first deployment overseas at which time our daughter came home to stay with us. It was difficult not to have him home during the holidays, but we waited till he came back in late January to celebrate Christmas. And it was well worth the wait! I admit at first it was hard to consider changing our traditional time of celebrating the season, but we wanted to save most of our festivities for our son-in-law's return. I think for many people, change is sometimes feared -- even something to be resisted. Perhaps some see change as an indication they have no control over their lives, so they do everything they can to avoid change and feel like its victim when they face it. Yet anyone who reads much of Mary Baker Eddy's writings probably gets a view of change as normal and sometimes necessary. She frequently uses such phrases as "change your course" . . . "a change demanded" . . . "change of heart" . . . "change the human concept of life . . ." And following change, comes the promise of growth, healing and progress. She makes change sound desirable and positive, and not a bad thing after all. Recently, I asked my daughter how she has adjusted to military life -- with its sometimes unexpected changes. She said, "That was the hardest element for me, not being able to plan out the next few years of our lives. I think the uncertainty we face has caused me to become a more fluid person. I am better able to deal with change and have become more spontaneous." As her mom, it has been fun to witness this change in my daughter. She no longer sees change as some burdensome challenge she must face at times. I see in her a young woman who has embraced change as natural as life itself. And so she has grown into a poised officer's wife while she also continues her own career goals. Not long after our son-in-law returned to the states, we learned he could deploy again much sooner than initially planned. I asked them how they felt about this possible change to their schedule. They said, "Deployments are hard and there is never a good time for your loved one to leave. We take it day by day, and just enjoy every moment we have together. In many ways we're a stronger couple for it because we don't waste time planning for things in the future. If we want to do something, no day is better than the present." They said that Eddy's ideas on improving moments and making the most of the present have been powerful, healing ideas as they live their ever-changing life together. I decided I needed to start examining my own heart to check for ways I may have become resistant to change. And the results have been rather surprising. I've uncovered viewpoints that were stagnant and stubborn. I discovered some traditions and routines which were unreasonably rigid avoiding any inclination of change. I could see that I had become set in some old ways which were not conducive to growth. I wanted this to change -- so, I'm working on being more spontaneous myself. Turning to prayer for guidance and fresh inspiration is helping me be more open to the idea of infinite possibilities. I'm becoming more willing to explore and consider new ideas and opportunities. I'm calmer in situations that arise unexpectedly. And I'm happier. Since change all too often leads to progress, I've concluded maybe all that's needed is simply a change in how I view change. Choosing the Right Aromatherapy eBook
By Lance G.Winslow At first it can seem intimidating with the number of ways there are to get into aromatherapy. The good news is you can learn more by signing up for an online class or reading an aromatherapy eBook without having to leave your favorite comfy chair. A few of these resources may be free. Depending on whether you want to walk away a certified aromatherapist or not other courses may cost between ten dollars to as much as $1,500. However, an indicator of quality isnt always price. The following article will give you information on how to sort out the worthwhile information from the timewasters. Certification An aromatherapist should be certified whether they are teaching an online class or writing an aromatherapy eBook. To find out you should check out your states licensing board. Proof of training may be required in some state for all alternative medicine healers. Even if states dont you should check to make sure there are no complaints that have been filed against the therapist in other areas of medicine. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy is another place you can check for a list of approved training programs and references. The NAHA is also a way to find a collection of recommended journals, websites and even a free aromatherapy eBook or two. The last area you should check is their experience. Find out if they run their own aromatherapy clinic and how many years of practice they have. Know if they have written other eBooks. The more books an individual has written means you are less likely to get an in depth aromatherapy eBook from them. If you are going to be paying a high amount of money for the eBook then this step is extremely important. Education The next thing you should find out is exactly what level of education you will need. If you are just starting out then you should find an aromatherapy eBook or class that covers the twelve basic essential oils that are found in most starter kits such as bay, bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, eucalyptus, geranium, lavender, lemon, orange, peppermint, rose, rosemary and ylang ylang. The best aromatherapy eBook for beginners are those that talk about how to blend oils, ways to diffuse the scents and how to safely handle the products. It is a good find if you manage to get one that also has a dash of history. Advanced level instruction usually focuses on branching out into specialized directions. You can download an aromatherapy eBook if you are craft oriented that will show you ways to turn your essential oils into fragranced candles or building your own diffusers. If you are interested in ways to use aromatherapy therapeutically or if you are more science minded then you should read a couple of eBooks on anatomy and physiology and focus your attention on the olfactory system. An aromatherapy eBook that deals with the legal and ethical issues involved is a good option to help those ready to start a practice get off on the right foot. Lance Winslow in an Aromatherapy and Essential Oils expert; and writes on aromatherapy, aromatherapy diffuser and aromatherapy herbs. Hiring for Your Craft Show Business
By Natalie Goyette The nature of your craft show business and your budget will
determine whether or not you need others to help you with any
aspect of your craft show business. Needless to say, the
success of your crafts at craft shows will also have a
considerable effect on whether or not you will need to hire
employees. On the "free" end, you can get help from friends and family to
produce your crafts and help with any business aspects. A tax
benefit for "hiring" your children under 18 is that you don't
have to pay social security or medicare taxes if your business
is a sole proprietorship or partnership owned solely by you and
your spouse. Next, you can find students or apprentices to work on your
crafts for free, or at least inexpensively. Contractors, who you
would just use on occasion when you need extra help, would be
the next level. You also may have friends who want to pick up a
little extra pocket change working on your crafts from home can
do some production work for you. A bookkeeper who comes in once
a month to balance your checkbook and enter your income and
expenses is a contractor, and you don't have to deal with taxes.
Check with the IRS or your accountant to be clear about the
difference between independent contractors and employees. If you feel you need employees as your craft show business
grows, you should consult an accountant or the Small Business
Administration for all the regulations. These might involve
registering with the Department of Labor, applying for Worker's
Compensation insurance and securing an employee identification
number (EIN) from your state and national government offices.
You'll need to apply for an EIN from the IRS anyway if you're
using a business name different from your own. When you use your
own name as your business name and you have no employees, your
social security number will suffice. You might also want to
check with your bank, because they may require an EIN to open a
business account, even if it's in your own name. Finally, consider which professionals you'll want to have in
your line-up of support. An accountant and lawyer are good to
have at least to call when issues come up. Many crafters have a
good photographer they use for promotional photos and slides of
their work. Quality slides can make the difference in getting
accepted to juried craft fairs. You may also occasionally need
the services of a graphic designer to create brochures, hangtags
or other marketing materials and a PR person if you want to take
out ads or run press releases. All of your decisions concerning
using other people to help you succeed are based on your needs,
your own abilities and your budget. Everyone needs to make these
choices for themselves. Natalie Goyette shows you how to make your craft show

5 Reasons Christians Don't Have a Clue
By Shane Eloe Have you noticed that Christians as a whole are some of the most misinformed individuals when it comes to their own religion? Here is a short list of some major misunderstandings that are held as biblical truths by many Christians. 5: Sunday is the Sabbath. Sorry to inform you that if you are attending church on Sunday you are not keeping the Sabbath. The Sabbath is Saturday, just ask your Jewish friends who follow the teachings found in the First Testament of your Holy Bible. 4: Mary was a Virgin. According to the biblical texts Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus. For any church to assume that she remained a married woman as well as a virgin after she gave birth to Jesus is pretty ridiculous. There are enough references in ancient text to the brother of Jesus that this is a pretty silly little idea. 3: The Bible as we know it was divinely inspired. Sorry to burst your bubble if you are not aware of the history surrounding how the Bible has come into its current form. First, the gospels were not written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The best scholarly dates on these texts suggests that they would have been written by someone who heard the story from grandpa Matthew or great uncle Mark, but credited their original source in the title of the text. Secondly, the books included in the bible were decided by committee with several versions of the life and times of Jesus not making the cut because they were not seen to be as believable. Finally, much of the bible started as an oral tradition that only came into a written form many years after the events had transpired. It is not like reading the newspaper where events are recorded within a few days or weeks of their occurrence. This calls into question the credibility and accuracy of much of the text due to lag time and the tendency of human memory to embellish the truth. 2: You cannot serve both God and Money. It seems funny that in the First Testament of the Holy Bible that riches are seen as a manifestation of someone who is favored by God, and by the Second Testament money is the corrupting influence of all society. Abraham was not chastised for being wealthy and neither should anyone else. Perhaps it is placing the seeking of wealth above the worship of God that is truly the problem with money, but not the possession of material wealth itself. 1: The Blessed Trinity. I challenge anyone to find biblical basis for this theological theory outside of church tradition and doctrine. It has no basis in the bible and no basis in Christian tradition if we consult experts on the Jewish religion that was the parent of the Christian religion. It was made up long after the time of Jesus so that some multi-god worshipping pagans would have an easier time accepting the Christian faith. I know a lot of Christians out there will not like this little article, but this is a reflection of some personal study as well as some theological studies at a Jesuit institution of higher learning. Brush Lawn Mowers
By Mandy Fain If your lawn is struggling to compete with the shrubs and tall grass out there you may want to consider purchasing a brush mower. They offer very strong blades with power to clear away the shrubs that are growing in your yard or the tree limbs that are scattered about. You will be surprise how well a brush mower works in assisting you with cleaning up your yard. Choose a model that allows you to chop, cut, and remove shredded trees. Trying to cut such objects with an ordinary gas mower will be frustrating and difficult. You will end up making the blades very dull as well. It isnt practical to have to use two different tools to get the job done when you can simply use a brush mower to take care of everything. The blades can cut through limbs up to 2 inches thick. Can your current lawn mower do that? Most of them cant! A brush mower is also easy to operate as it starts with the touch of a button. No more struggling with a cord by pulling it with all your strength to get the motor turning. Getting rid of the shrubs that have taken over your yard is the best way to help it look beautiful. Dont spend hundreds of dollars hiring someone to clear them out for you when you can easily do it on your own with a brush mower. There is a bar that breaks the shrubs and grass down and pushes it around the blades. It is a hassle free way to get rid of those unwanted items in your yard as well as cut your grass. You can also find more information at Brush Mower and Electric Lawn Mower. http://www.Lawnmower-report.com is a comprehensive resource to get help how to remove mower from your lawn. New York Laser Hair Removal FAQs
By Josh Riverside Laser hair removal is a modern technique that has gained enormous popularity. As the name suggests, laser beams are used to treat hair follicles. The entire process is completed after a number of sittings. It may seem to be the perfect answer to hair woes, but New Yorkers should inquire about the procedure to understand it wholly. A common query amongst people is whether they are suitable for this treatment. Its important to know the treatment will not have identical results on different clients and all people can't opt for laser hair removal in New York. This is because the treatment can only be carried out on specific skin and hair types. It is easy to understand price ranges because they are directly related to the amount of hair removal involved. Cost of laser hair removal can be based upon "pulse" or each laser shot. These parameters tend to vary and customers should choose accordingly. An important limitation in this procedure does not permit treatment on skin close to the client's eyes. Questions related to authenticity of permanent removal claims will be treated differently at various New York centers. This is because results tend to vary on different people. Keeping in mind safety conditions, clients should inquire about a center's reputation. This is because the procedure is complex and should be performed by trained, certified professionals. It's important to ask about the side- effects of laser hair removal. These outcomes may vary but the client should inquire about treatment and precautions to ensure safety and success. Others may even inquire about long-term effects, success rate of a clinic and actual treatment procedures. It is advisable to ask about the number of sittings required. This is because single sittings don't offer desired results while multiple sittings will increase monetary commitments. Dieting, Permanent Weight Loss
By Jeff Baker "The inn is not as comforting as the journey." unknown For those of us who've battled our weight our whole lives, dieting is often a life-long companion, one we sometimes both love and hate, one in which we first grow giddy with excitement at the potential, but more often than not, one in which we feel has lets us down in the end. But is it really the "diet's" fault? There are certainly dozens of diets that come and go only to resurface again over the years. Fitness guru's found on late-night infomercials are all too willing to take your money with the promise of giving you a model's body in six weeks or less using their simple and fun program for just twenty minutes a day three times a week! Over your lifetime you have probably tried more than one diet and may have even tried the same diet several times. Even with all these promises you see people, ordinary people, who have lost significant amounts of weight through dieting and exercising though not with any particular diet or exercise but using any one of the current diet "fads" or exercise machines on the market. Dieting does work and it has probably worked for you one or more times. People can and do lose weight on whatever their diets of choice is. It's clear there's no one perfect diet but rather each person has a diet that's perfect for them and their body. For one person's body it might be low fat and high carb, for another it might be low carb and high fat. The actual diet itself doesn't matter nor do the specific exercises that you do. What is important is finding the combination of the right diet and exercises the you can and will do and that work for you. However, the single most important factor in determining your chances of success is in your mind and not your particular diet or exercise program. Your mental "game", above all else, will determine your level of success. You must have a burning desire to reach your dieting goals, you must also create a plan, have faith in attaining that goal, review the goal frequently, and consistently overcome all obstacles until your goal is reached. Only once you've mastered your mental "game" can you be assured of successfully reaching your dieting goals. The mental factor may be the most important part of succeeding, but it is just the start. There's one other factor most people do not realized about dieting and it's almost as important as the mental game for long-term success. This one factor contributes more to your dietary and fitness failures than perhaps any other factor besides lacking a correct mental game. Dieting, which is setting and reaching a goal, is only the first half of the process. Once reached, your goal is not the end of your journey. It's only the beginning of a new goal, the second half of your complete success. It's kind of like going through school as a child. Each year you reached toward the end of the year when school was out and you had successfully completed that grade level. But there was always another grade level to complete. The other half of your "dieting" journey is now applying and maintaining what you've learned along the way to reach another goal: maintaining your new healthy lifestyle. This is not just for the short term but it is purposefully making a lifestyle change for a permanent improvement in your health and fitness. Only once you've realized that all permanent health and fitness changes in your life are really two parts, reaching your dieting and fitness goals and then maintaining them with a new ongoing goal, can you then come to understand that the most important parts aren't the goals, it's the journey to your goals. Then and only then will your health and fitness decisions be successful for the rest of your life. FREE Goal-Powered Fitness Newsletter!

The Benefits of Koi Ponds
By Mark Justice Sure, having a Koi pond is rather trendy these days. With their growing popularity it seems that everybody wants a Koi pond. But are there any real benefits to having your very own Koi pond? The testimonials of happy Koi pond owners, real estate agents, and even from doctors reporting on the improved health among their patients who have a Koi pond certainly indicate that there are benefits to having your own Koi pond. The presence of a Koi pond on a piece of real estate raises that properties “marketability” many real estate agents will tell you. This makes it easier for the agent to attract prospective buyers to the property and often plays a key role in how quickly that real estate will sell and at what price. .Buyers are drawn to real estate that have such added amenities as Koi ponds and the mystical beauty they hold and many of them are willing to pay higher asking prices to purchase a property that contains a Koi pond. Real estate that has real market value not only increases the likelihood of a homeowner getting a higher asking price from a buyer, the real estate surrounding a property having a Koi pond are also benefited with higher values. Koi pond owners report that having a personal Koi pond to enjoy at their leisure allows them to relax and reduce the amount of stress that the average always-on-the-go lifestyle that most of us lead can cause. De-stressing near the water’s edge is also a time for getting in-touch with one’s inner- spiritual self as well. Many of these Koi pond owners share that they feel “rejuvenated” after spending quiet time near their Koi pond. They report a sense of “centeredness” and feel they are more capable of handling the stresses of everyday life head-on. Some doctors have begun to voice their opinions about the benefits of having a personal Koi pond. They have gained these opinions by witnessing improvements in such medical conditions as high blood pressure, anxiety disorders, and some heart conditions in patients known to have their own personal Koi pond. Stress can exasperate these conditions and doctors are always looking for ways they can recommend to their patients for reducing the amount of stress in their lives for better health. Doctors have even found that many stroke and heart attack sufferers recover sooner when they have an area they can access frequently for relaxation, such as with a Koi pond. Mark Justice has developed many websites over the years in many different business areas. He has a free Blog, Koi Ponds. Why Are Some Settlements Confidential?
By Gerry Oginski Q: Why are some settlements confidential? A: In some cases, insurance companies may offer a settlement before trial. Sometimes, in an effort to resolve the case, as an incentive they will offer an amount of money that is acceptable to the injured victim. But, in some instances, the insurance company wants an assurance that the terms of the settlement are not revealed. They do this for two reasons. Neither one of which is out of the goodness of their heart. The first reason is that they don't want publicity associated with a settlement. Publicity about an insurance company paying money to an injured victim is never good for them especially since they earn their money by KEEPING their money, not giving it away. Second, is that other attorneys with similar cases will never learn that the insurance company paid out a certain amount is a specific type of case. So, when the next lawyer tries to negotiate a case with the insurance company, he or she won't be able to say "You paid 'x' dollars on the Jones case, so therefore you have to pay at least that amount on this case." Sometimes, the only way an insurance company will offer such a settlement is on the condition that the terms of the agreement be confidential. Otherwise, there might be no settlement, and the case would proceed to trial. A client might be willing to agree to this restriction if it were in their best interests. Some clients want to publicize the damage and injuries they suffered as well as any compensation they received for their injuries. In that instance a confidential settlement agreement would not be advisable. Attorney Oginski has been in practice for over 16 years as a trial lawyer practicing exclusively in the State of New York. Having his own law firm, he is able to provide the utmost in personalized, individualized attention to each and every client. In our office, a client is not a file number. How to Choose Between Goldfish and KOI
By Brett Fogle Many people have asked us over the years "Should I add
goldfish or KOI (or both) to my pond? The answer is "it
depends." Goldfish are better suited to smaller water gardens and
ponds, in the 50 - 500 gallon range. Goldfish are
extremely hardy and easy to care for, which makes them
the perfect choice for the new pond owner or water
gardener. KOI Feeding KOI, on the other hand, require a little more knowledge
and better water quality in most cases, than goldfish
and are better suited to the more experienced pond
keeper. KOI generally thrive best in ponds over 500
gallons (the bigger - the better.) This is becuase KOI can grow quite large and therefore
require more water in the pond for proper biological
breakdown of waste. KOI are also more expensive (and
harder to replace) than goldfish, so this should also
be taken into account before filling your new pond full
of KOI fish. More considerations... Goldfish are an excellent choice for the average water
garden that is usually also full of a variety of potted
plants. Lilies, Lotus, Iris, and submerged annuals -
these all do well in a water garden pond with goldfish.
Goldfish will not disturb the plants, and will enjoy
playing around under the lily pads without disturbing
the plants. Pond Goldfish Japanese KOI on the other hand, and especially the
larger ones, will often create a huge mess out of
submerged potted plants. They seem to enjoy 'digging'
in the soil of the plants and sometimes even knocking
them over. This all leads to added mess in the pond,
and can create a real problem for the pond owner. Generally, it's best to not have submerged plants in
large pots, when also keeping KOI. The ideal KOI pond
is much deeper than the average water garden, so the
necessity for plants to help with water quality and
shade is reduced. However, if you still do want to keep potted plants in
your KOI pond, we recommend wrapping netting over the
tops of the pots, to keep the fish from digging in the
pots. Another thing you can do is to top the pots with
1" of pea gravel, and then larger river stones or
similar over that. The KOI will not be able to get
past the larger rocks. As far as mixing Goldfish with KOI, this is fine and
very common, we've just tried to highlight the most
important differences between the two and between the
average water garden and KOI pond. Feel free to
experiment with both, and then decide which fish is
more to your liking. **************************************************

The 3 Biggest Secrets For Staying Married For Life
By Angie Lewis Managing your marriage doesnt have to be difficult. It takes a few initiatives on your part to get yourself into the proper prospective of how marriage really works. Marriage is about living your purpose and attaining your goals that are related to that purpose. 1. Marriage Takes Team Players Marriage takes team players working together to accomplish the same objectives. It doesnt matter what those goals are, but what does matter is how you play the game. For an example, a wife should not go her own way, and not consider her husband and the husband should not go his own way without considering his wife. What is that anyway? Thats not the intention of Gods design for marriage. I think thats downright selfishness. In marriage there is no room for selfish actions. Each spouse should look for ways to build each other up for the good of the marriage. When you work with your spouse, helping them and encouraging them when they need it, you are helping the marriage to become all that it can be. Do you realize that marriage is a gift from God? God gave Adam and Eve the gift of each other. Eve was a beautiful sight to behold for Adam and the marriage was consummated when he became one in flesh with her. The gift to us is that a man will leave his parents so he can be united to his wife, and become one in the sexual joining together with her. This is what marriage is! If you could imagine for moment, the person you married as a gift from God, then your actions would begin to work towards building up the gift you have been blessed with, instead of doing things that would tear down the gift and damage the marriage union. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. Genesis 2:22-24 2. Marriage Takes Commitment In marriage commitment is finishing what you start? When you stand at the altar, making promises and stating your vows to the person you love that is the starting point for your commitment to stay married for life? How well you keep those promises and vows shows your level of commitment to the marriage. Are you still married to your first love? Commitment is not difficult to achieve when we make marriage an important aspect of our life.
We can follow Gods design meant for marriage or we can follow the flawed design of society. The culture of today has shown us how to throw marriage aside as if it means nothing. But Gods intention for marriage is a commitment for life. At the beginning of the world God created the union of marriage between a man and a woman to be permanent until death. Treat your gift with the commitment it deserves. 3. Marriage Takes Respect Respecting the person you married takes action. Respect is submission, humility and appreciation all rolled into one. The flawed view of this is that couples believe these things need to be earned. Earning points to be treated with respect is wrong. This is what conditional love is all about. But Gods design for marriage is based upon unconditional love for each other. Submission is voluntarily cooperating with your spouse out of love and respect for them. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under Gods mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be self controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:5-6 Bottom line is if you work together, commit yourselves to the marriage and respect one another the devil cannot come in and devour your marriage. Angie Lewis writes on subjects such as love, sex, and intimacy between couples. Her marriage books center on the biblical foundations that God outlines for couples to follow for an exceptional marriage. Old Cell Phones-Where Do They All Go?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=James_Mosieur]James Mosieur Last year consumers in the United States purchased more than 100 million new cell phones. Not only was this an increase over the previous year, it brought the total number of cell phone users in the U.S. to more than 180 million. You might not think cell phone waste is a big problem since the average cell phone today weighs less than 6 ounces. However, since more than one-half of all Americans now own cell phones, isnt it time we take a look at what happens to our old cell phone when we upgrade, change or cancel our service. According to Inform Inc, a non-profit institute which keeps tabs on such numbers, there are more than 500 million old cell phones sitting unused in drawers, closets and desks around the country. All of these contain chemicals and substances which are harmful to the environment if improperly disposed of. U.S. consumers replace between 100 million and 130 million cell phones each year. Unfortunately, the cell phone recycling industry processes less than 10 million of these. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that if there are already 500 million old cell phones and we add between 90 million and 120 million to this number each year pretty soon we have a big problem! This brings us back to our initial question Where do all the old cell phones go? As I mentioned a short time ago, within the wireless industry there is a segment which takes these old cell phones and does one of several things with them.
Some are sold for use in other countries
Some are donated to shelters for use in a variety of emergency (911) phone programs
Some are repaired or refurbished and sold in the U.S. either as replacement or pre-paid phones
Finally, others are broken down to the essential elements and recycled The bottom line is that U.S. consumers replace their cell phones approximately every 18 months which allows them to take advantage of the newest technology and features. In most cases the cell phone being replaced still works fine and has a lot of useful life left in it. Just because we are through using it does not mean it has suddenly become junk. We all need to be responsible stewards of our planets resources and make sure that when we get a new cell phone we find a home for our old cell phone. In most instances your carrier will offer you a recycling option, but if not there are plenty of places on the internet to sell your phone, donate it to charity, or simply send it in at no cost for recycling. James Mosieur is CEO of RMS Communications Group, Inc. RMS operates several cell phone recycling websites like http://www.CellForCash.com . He has been in the electronics recycling business since 1985. James writes and speaks on cell phone recycling and related subjects particularly as they relate to the individual consumer. Is Marriage Relevant
By Terence Ward Marriage in America is indeed a contract a contract that comes with more obligations than rights. Marriage in America is a civil right that is not now and has never been in the past dependent upon any one religion or even religion in general for its justification, existence, or perpetuation. Marriage exists because people desire it and the community, working through the government, helps ensure that married couples are able to do what they need to in order to survive. At no point is religion needed or even necessarily relevant. I wholeheartedly concur that marriage is a contract, and that it is a contract with the community. That doesn't mean, though, that marriage isn't first and foremost a sacred rite. The confusion lies in the fact that churches were the first institutions of community in most places. The rituals that developed necessarily encompassed the entirety of the needs of the community. The Romans were extremely secular, and their marriages generally paid only passing homage to their gods, as was their wont. The rights and responsibilities of marriage were established by the secular authorities. However, this departure was muddled by the Church more or less taking over Rome (although the question of who assimilated whom is probably worthy of its own discussion). We have reached a point in the maturity of our society when we do not need the auspices of a single (or even multiple) religious institutions in order to attend to the needs of our populace. Like it or not, people don't need a belief in a higher power to ensure safe food preparation, prevent homicide, or rear children. Plenty of agnostics roam the earth in a state that passes for happiness, and secular humanists seem to have gotten it right. Marriage was intended to be a sacred rite. The fact that it came to shoulder the burden of other, very necessary, civil responsibilities does not change this fact. The word itself should be relegated to a religious ceremony, and the definition of an appropriate marriage (or handfasting, for that matter) should be left entirely to the religious institution. To suggest otherwise is to dishonor the varied beliefs of the vast majority of this planet. The civil contract between a couple and the community should be the sole responsibility of the local municipal authorities. Priests and rabbis should not work for the State, at least not in this country. Let judges and mayor sign the licenses. Taking God out of the equation in this manner might make it a little easier to allow people to have normal family lives even if they don't happen to believe that a heterosexual union is normal for them. Terence P Ward expresses much of his observations about the world through the written word, spoken word, visual media . . . well, any way he damned well pleases. Most of what he's responsible for can be found at, or through, otherlleft.com. He also maintains a blog for his endless epinions at paganworldview.blogspot.com. Bachelor Degree - Computer Science
By Michael Russell Remember the good old days when you went to college and they didn't even have a bachelor degree program for computer science? They may have had one or two courses you could take, but a whole discipline in it? Not a prayer. Well, my friend, the times they are a changing, to paraphrase Bob Dylan. Today, colleges offer some very extensive programs in computer science in order to keep up with the computer schools who have been offering computer certificates for some time now. Below you will find a typical bachelor degree program for anyone who wants to graduate with a BS in computer science. Your first semester in college, when starting a program in computer science, usually starts you off slowly. They'll begin with what they typically call an Introduction To Computer Science. This course will include a history of computers and some basic terminology like bits and bytes, RAM, ROM, etc. It's not very difficult as far as your actual programming skill, but it does require a lot of memorization and that is the difficult part of it. There is just so much to learn. Many students actually can't even get past this part. In the meantime, while they are taking their computer course, they usually take other science related course like Calculus and Chemistry. After a student finishes the introductory course, which can sometimes last for two semesters, their second year is where they start to pick the specialties that they want to concentrate on. This is where they have to make some very difficult decisions. They can either go into the programming end of computers or they can focus on things like networking or even computer repair and building. The purpose of the intro course is to prepare them for making this choice. Unfortunately, most intro courses are too weak to do this and the student is left totally confused and unable to decide where to go next. That's where the school councilors come in. Once the student does make the decision, the courses offered are numerous. For those who want to get into programming there are the basic courses to ease them into programming, such as BASIC, FORTRAN and COBOL. These courses are usually offered the first semester of year two. From there, the student advances to programming languages like C++ and PASCAL. They are also introduced to object oriented programming like Visual Basic. Object oriented programming is probably the most in demand form of programming today. For those who don't want to go into programming but rather go into the systems end of things, they are offered courses like networking, which usually concentrate on networking systems like Novell and Microsoft Networks. Students who take these courses usually spend a lot of time in the lab putting together small networks. That's one thing about a computer science bachelor degree. There is a lot of hands on. Finally, to get your actual bachelor degree a student will have to complete a final project. This will involve either writing a very complex program, for programmers, or putting together a small network, for networkers. Unlike a lot of other disciplines, those who graduate with a bachelor degree in computer science, are actually somewhat prepared for getting a real job.
