Free Apartment Finder Services Make Finding Your Next Apartment Easy

By Diane Sims Perhaps youve seen advertisements about apartment finder services, otherwise called apartment locators. Some apartment renters are unsure about using apartment finder services because they think there will be a cost involved. Actually the majority of apartment finder services are absolutely free to the apartment hunter. Since its a free service, theres no reason not to use an apartment finder! In large cities such as Chicago, Dallas and Houston there are hundreds of apartment complexes spread out over a very large metro area. When there are so many properties the apartment hunter can become overwhelmed with the vast number of choices available. It's hard to even know where to start. Driving from one complex to the next will often result in frustration because the apartment is not what youre looking for, or the complex doesnt have any units available. The great advantage of using the services of a free apartment finder is that the company will have a database of apartments which shows availability. Therefore the apartment finder company will know which rentals are on the market. This way you don't waste time trying to track down apartments with availability. Renters can save time and energy using a free apartment finder service by knowing ahead of time which apartments aren't a good match. The apartment locator helps their clients find apartments that meet criteria such as floor plan, size, amenities, age of the complex and many other specifications. Apartment finder services can also narrow down choices by geographic area and sometimes even neighborhood. For large cities such as Chicago and Houston where traffic can be an issue, the location becomes increasingly important. Most renters prefer to live within a specific distance to work or school, so they need to be able to find apartments within a certain area. Other renters want to live within certain areas because of the location of shopping, entertainment, parks, or other qualities of the neighborhood such as quietness. There are some apartment finder services that specialize in condos, townhouses and privately owned residential homes. There may be properties that are managed by the apartment finder service, or are listed in the locator database that are not advertised elsewhere. Therefore renters will be given an opportunity to view apartments that the general public may not be aware of just by viewing the classifieds. Many apartment finder services offer a free online database of available apartments so you can learn more about the complex before visiting in person. You will be able to see photos of the apartment, floor plans, amenities and other apartment details. Try using a free apartment finder service the next time you decide to move to a new apartment and see for yourself how much time and effort you will save on your next move. It makes the whole apartment hunting experience easy and hassle free. About The Author

Easy Pumpkin Centerpiece

By Rachel Paxton Need an easy, inexpensive centerpiece for your autumn table? All
you need is a pumpkin and a handful of fall flowers. You can
complete this project in less than an hour! Supplies: Pumpkin
Fall flowers
Sharp knife
Large spoon Prepare your work area by spreading out some old newspapers.
Using a sharp knife, carefully remove the top of the pumpkin.
Use the large spoon to scoop all of the pulp and seeds out of the
pumpkin. If you need this done in a hurry for a dinner party, go ahead and
arrange your flowers inside the pumpkin. If you have the extra
time, let the pumpkin dry out for at least a couple of hours
before you arrange your flowers. I used artificial flowers and cattails in my pumpkin centerpiece, but you
could also use fresh flowers and dried grasses. If your pumpkin is wide and deep
enough, you could place an entire flower pot in it. Use your pumpkin to decorate your fall or Thanksgiving table, or
place it anywhere in your home to give your home the feel of
autumn. Set one on your front porch to welcome visitors! Here is a photo of my completed pumpkin centerpiece:

Herb Gardening Indoors

By Mary Hanna Here are some tips for herb gardening indoors that will simulate the conditions in an outside garden. For Herb gardening indoors the growing climates need to be pretty much the same as the conditions outside. Get your herb plants from a good garden center nursery who will have plenty of garden advice to help you with your inside garden. You will need some garden equipment like a small digging garden tool, garden gloves, organic fertilizer and some small gardening containers. You probably already have most of these garden supplies in your garden shed. Soil is the most important aspect of growing herbs indoors. Use only top grade potting soil with an organic fertilizer mixed in. If you think it is too fine a soil, use a little perlite. Fertilize while potting the herbs and they should be happy until spring. If you have an herb that is not growing vigorously add a little organic liquid fertilizer to the water. When you go to transplant the herb, go one inch up in the size of the gardening container. If the plant is in a two inch pot, go to a three inch gardening container. Leave the roots alone and be careful not to bruise the stem. Don't plant oreganos, mints, lemon balm or bee balm with other plants because they will overgrow everything. Pot these herbs in a garden container all their own. Some people swear that you must put garden stones in the bottom of the gardening container, but I dispute that opinion. I feel that the garden stones take valuable space away from the herb roots. When it comes to light, all herbs must get 4 to 6 hours of sunlight a day on your window sill. If your window doesnt supply that much light then purchase garden grow lights and hang them three inches above the plants. If you live in a very hot climate shade the herbs during the hottest periods. If you live in a very cold climate keep the herbs away from the cold glass panes. When it comes to watering, dont let the herbs dry out but dont drown them either. An inexpensive water meter from your garden center nursery will help with this important step in growing your herbs. Always use room temperature water so as not to shock the herb's roots. If you follow all of these steps you will have a healthy herb garden all winter. Copyright 2005 Mary Hanna. All Rights reserved. Panama: The Benefits of This Jurisdiction for Your IBC

By Richard Price Panama constitution provides the highest levels of banking and corporate secrecy/privacy laws in the world. With Britain's proposed regulation for removal of bank and corporate book secrecy in the UK offshore territories, it is clear that Panama will remain one of the only secure offshore financial centers in terms of privacy and confidentiality that is not only respected, but vigorously protected by constitutional law. Panama has no mutual legal assistance treaties (MLAT's) for sharing of banking information with any other nation and does not recognize court rulings from other countries. In fact revealing banking information to third parties is a crime in Panama, punishable by imprisonment. There is no such thing as "piercing the corporate veil" in Panama. Panama Corporations offer "Bearer Shares", allowing shareholders to maintain 100% privacy and confidentiality. Panama is a 100% Tax free Haven. Non-resident Panamanian International Business Corporations (IBC's) and Private Interest Foundations do not pay tax on any of their income (as indicated below), nor do they have any reporting requirements to the Panamanian government on non-Panamanian source income:
No income tax.
No capital gains tax.

Can Your Degrees Hurt Your Chances At A Job?

By Carl Mueller Can your level of education hurt your chances at a job? As a recruiter, Ive seen instances where:

1. A person is considered to be under educated: Ive dealt with several companies who wont consider a candidate unless they have a certain level of education ie. a university or college degree. In some cases a certain level of education might be absolutely necessary (ie. if youre an accountant, the company might require you to be certified) but in other cases it might simply be company policy that every employee needs a minimum level of education. 2. A person is considered to be over educated: I can recall several instances when a hiring manager declined to interview a candidate because they felt that the candidate was too educated or looking at it another way, too theoretical and not hands-on enough.

How can you strike a balance between the two? To be honest, it really depends on your specific situation and the job you are pursuing. While you dont want to leave out your educational achievements, the truth is that how you present your scholastic achievements can effect your ability to get interviews and get jobs. Ive spoken with hiring managers who Ive had to convince to interview excellent job candidates because at a first glance, the persons resume appeared to the hiring manager to be too school-centric with not enough real life work experience on it. When youre putting your resume together, you really need to tailor it to the specific job you are applying for. Obviously if you are applying for a job in the education industry, listing all of your publications, papers and other similar items makes sense. If you are applying for a job where your education is a nice to have or just a simple requirement, you need to focus on highlighting your real life work experience and use your educational achievements as something that might help to distinguish you from other candidates, not as the main selling feature. In other words, you need to ensure you focus your resume to highlight what the employer needs based on what they are asking for. Finding Simple Country Crafts

By Jared Winston Country crafts have been popular across the country for many years. There is a certain quality about things that fit into the country style that just connects with people. There are few things that can make a person feel quite as at home as a simple piece of artwork or a little trinket that gives a place a country atmosphere. Many such items can be purchased for relatively little money, and many times it does not take much to create the welcoming atmosphere you want. Country crafts can easily act simply as accent pieces, or become a theme unto themselves, depending entirely on how far you want to go with them. There are a number of places in which you can find country crafts of all types and at all prices. For instance, craft supply stores will often sell some amount of pre-made crafts. These will usually do well enough as small elements, but generally are not the best of choices as a larger, focus piece, as the fact that you found them in a craft store will probably be a bit obvious in many cases if it draws too much attention. However, these are often very inexpensive and can sometimes be used as part of something larger. Usually the more promising prospects are things such as art fairs and craft shows. Now, the price of the items available at these shows will vary greatly, usually based upon how prestigious the given show is. Of course, going to a big, high-name show will often mean you will not have to wade through poorly made items in your search for high quality country crafts. You will, however, most likely pay for that convenience. Your best bet is to work your way through as many different shows as possible, to give yourself the best chance of finding what you need. Remember also that as a rule at most craft fairs and art shows, hesitation is not a great plan. This is not to say you should not shop around at all, but if you see something you like, try not to wait. Once something sells, it is entirely possible that there are no other items of its kind, and you may never be able to find it again. While this can be a bit troublesome at times, it is one of the inherent problems of handcrafted merchandise such as the things you normally find at craft shows. Lastly, the Internet can also be an excellent way to find the country crafts you need. The problem with the Internet, of course, is that it is difficult to tell quite what sort of quality the items you are working with are from just seeing them on a web page. This said, a little bit of careful shopping and sometimes a willingness to take a gamble on an item can lead you to some great deals on country crafts for your home. The Internet is also an excellent place to find instructions on how to make crafts of your own, if you would like to undertake that adventure. Copyright Jared Winston, 2006. All Rights Reserved. Keep Your Online Dating Search Organized

By Karin Anderson Are you frustrated with online dating because you cant keep track of all the emails, pictures and other details? We simplify the process by keeping your online search organized and your computer files readily accessible! Youll appreciate being able to relax and forget the paperwork so you can just enjoy online dating! 1. Visualize your computer as the most organized metal filing cabinet ever, with plenty of supplies, folders, label maker, etc. 2. Create a folder labeled something obvious like Online Dating or a bit more discreet like The Search. 3. Need help for creating a folder on your computer? Weve listed helpful instructions on CREATING FOLDERS and other helpful tips on our website. 4. Think of the folder youve named The Search (or whatever youve chosen) as the file cabinet where youre going to store all aspects related to online dating until you meet your mate, of course! Youll store emails and notes and pictures, etc. Yes, it takes a little more time to be organized, but it makes the online dating process more manageable and thus more fun! 5. Now we need to create folders within The Search so all your emails, notes and pictures arent in one big jumble. 6. Create a folder called Pictures to store the digital photos that you like of yourself to post with your ad and additional photos to send as you correspond with potential mates. 7. Now youve got a system! Create a folder for each ad you place. Remember to name it simply, so theres no confusion between the first ad you placed on Match.com and the second one you placed on eHarmony. For example, start with the dating site name and the date you placed your ad. So youll have a folder called MATCH100905 and eHARMONY010106. Hopefully your search to find your mate online will be short and sweet. Meanwhile, keeping your online search organized allows you to concentrate on having fun on your dates! Authors Karin Anderson and Beth Roberts share these and other tips that they used to meet their husbands online, in their book, FINDING YOUR MATE ONLINE: NO FEAR, NO EMBARRASSMENT, JUST LOVE! Find out more about the authors and their book at www.JustShowMeWhat2Do.com. Check out their blog page for answers to online dating questions. Have a question of your own? Contact the authors and theyll promptly post a reply. www.JustShowMeWhat2Do.com/contact.html Or share your online dating success story with the authors and be featured in their newsletter. Karin Anderson, a successful, Hollywood Script Coordinator, credits meeting the man of her dreams to the list she created describing what she wanted in a mate. This quirky list included a desire to meet a man who grew up with sisters John has two and a man who loves to read John visits bookstores around the world for his job as a music Tour Manager. Karins wish list developed into the ABOUT HIM list that she encourages all readers to fill out to meet the mate of their dreams. Beth Roberts, an Executive Vice President at NBC Universal was, like many women, mortified at the thought of posting an ad and spent years as an online dating voyeur. Having analyzed hundreds of ads by the time she posted her own at age 40, Beth created an honest and revealing statement about herself, and the idea for the list, ABOUT THE ADS, was born. Beth met with 5 men, all of them classic great guys. The fifth man, Warren, is now her husband. The Increasing Value of Alternative Fuel Sources

By Morgan Hamilton Although alternative fuel sources are not sufficient and still not ready to take over, they are still better than nothing. As people already start worrying about their future, which seems to be darker and colder with each passing day, alternative fuel sources will become more and more popular. Their importance is not overrated at all as humanity has already exhausted half of the worlds oil reserves and it will not only become more and more expensive to extract smaller and smaller amounts of oil, but it will definitely come to its end one day. Unfortunately our economy now seems to be so dependent on gasoline that even if we switch to alternative fuel sources, and the sooner we do that the better for everyone, it might still not be enough to save our lives. Not being one of the major alternative fuel sources for cars, solar power is actually a very useful one and whats more it will always be available for us to use. The main application of solar power is in our houses where with a few solar panels we can provide all the heating and the hot water we will need. Apart from that there are other ways also of getting an entire house powered and running only using alternative fuel sources, although it is still an expensive option. A large step towards switching to alternative fuel sources were the Hybrid cars. Technically they dont actually use alternative fuel sources, but they have found a way to optimize gas consumption to the unbelievable 50 miles per gallon or even more with the use of conventional gasoline. And thinking realistically this is way better than burning alternative, but still inefficient, fuels such as vegetable oils, Biodiesel, ethanol etc. of course those vehicles powered by alternative fuels free us from the dependence on oil, but they still pollute the environment with the smoke coming out of the exhausts. That is the main reason it doesnt make any sense to me. Why should we switch from one thing to another if the second one is not going to be any better than the first? Hydrogen and electricity seem to be the two most promising alternatives for fueling our future. They are very closely related as hydrogen is a highly efficient power storage option, and stored in the form of hydrogen in the car, the power is, when needed, being converted in electricity. In this way constructors avoid the need of huge and heavy batteries to store the energy. Losing the batteries on its turn, means that the car can be lighter and thus much more efficient and easier to run and maintain. These two alternative fuel sources might become the long awaited solution for the worlds fuel problems; however they need to be perfected first. Morgan Hamilton offers expert advice and great tips regarding all aspects concerning finance. A Healthy New Year Includes Chocolate

By Gerene Schendel Chocolate lovers will rejoice when they hear that it has actually been researched and concluded that it is a healthy addition to your diet in moderation. The resourceful Mayans and Aztecs were the first tribes that discovered this substance 3000 years ago in Central America. The pods were from the cacao trees and were fermented to make a strong bitter drink called xocoatl, meaning" bitter water". On occasion maize or vanilla was added to the bitter liquid to make it more palatable. Cocoa beans were also used as currency. The Swedish botanist Linnaeus, introduced the systematic task of classifying plants. In 1730 he gave them latin names and the cacao tree was given the identity Theobroma, meaning " food of the gods", or "divine food". Cacao bean trees bear fruit nearly year-round and the flavors of the beans vary depending on the time of the year they are harvested. Two harvests are gathered per year, November to January known as the "Christmas crop" and a smaller harvest in June, known as the" St. John's crop". Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, the author of a rare book on gastronomy titled Physiolgie du Gout in 1826 stated "The persons who habitually take chocolate are those who enjoy the most equable and instant health, and are the least liable to a multitude of illnesses which spoil the enjoyment of life." New and constantly emerging studies indicate chocolate can treat depression, because it contains phenylethylamine, a slight anti-depressant similar to our body's own dopamine and adrenaline. Chocolate also tends to increase levels of serotonine which aids persons with depression and PMS symptoms. The cocoa butter aspect of chocolate acts similar to olive oil, containing a number of essential oils that are beneficial for strengthing the bones, hair folicals and nails. Flavonoids that chocolate contain, appear to prevent cell damage and inflamation, also benefiting the skin from aging. This divine food contains vitamins A1, B1, B2, C, D and E. Minerals include calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium, iron ,zinc, copper, chromium and phosphorous. With the 136 studies done thus far on the health benefits of chocolate, studies confirm that cocoa contain antioxidants which fight free radicals that form cancer and anticoagulants which are the same properties of asprin and prevent blood clots, increases blood flow and less platelet stickiness. It has also been sited for improving bad cholestrerol by as much as 10 percent. Each American consumes about 12 pounds of chocolate per year, now you have permission to enjoy the rich, creamy deliciousness of chocolate. After all everything was put on this Earth for a reason, but also everything should be enjoyed in moderation. Gerene Schendel is passionate about chocolate and she invites you to follow your bliss. Moses v. Jesus: Why do Conservative Christians Prefer Moses' Commandments to Jesus' Beatitudes?

By Hans Hacker Why are conservative Christians so concerned about displaying the Ten Commandments in public and especially in courtrooms? Conservatives and their lawyers claim that the Ten Commandments are (or, should regain their position) at the heart of American jurisprudence because the Decalogue represents our commitment to Rule of Law. And, they have made these arguments in cases like McCreary County v. ACLU of Kentucky[1] (in which the ACLU challenged the legality of displaying framed copies of the Ten Commandments in two Kentucky courtrooms) and Van Orden v. Perry[2] (involving a challenge to the legality of a Ten Commandments monument displayed as part of a statehouse exhibit). Immediately after the Supreme Court decided these two cases, Mat Staver, the conservative Christian attorney who argued the McCreary County case, stated The Ten Commandments have become a universally recognized symbol of law because of its [sic] influence on our law and notions of right and wrong. The Court should recognize the Ten Commandments are more than an historical relic. The Founders would be outraged that we are even debating the constitutionality of the Ten Commandments. That the Ten Commandments would be deemed unconstitutional is an insult to the Constitution, to our shared religious history [3] While the Supreme Court decisions released this week in these two cases did little to resolve the issue of religious displays, they elevate the issue in the American culture wars while obscuring a broader set of questions that we should consider: Are the Ten Commandments really a building block of American society, and a representation of our preference for order? If they are, should they be? Given our culture, tradition and values, should we display the Ten Commandments publicly as a sign of reverence for our institutions? Frankly, I doubt it. I am certainly not against religious displays in public.[4] But, I would be much more in favor of the idea if conservatives were arguing for the public display of what should be the set of tenets at the center of Christianity and its influence of society - the Beatitudes. In pursuing this discussion, it is easy to get off track, and onto a kind of argument that is not particularly productive - the appropriateness of displaying religious documents in public forums,[5] or appropriate standards of review for governmental policies implicating religion.[6] I hope we dont, because I want to raise an issue related to the questions I posed above, one that I find much more interesting. Its time for conservative Christians to decide who do you like better, Moses or Jesus? It cant possibly be both, because as we know from St. Pauls letters that Jesus freed us from the Law (promulgated by God through Moses, in the Christian and Judaic traditions). Jesus Beatitudes are a new law of redemption leading to freedom, peace, charity and happiness. The word beatitude itself comes from the Latin beatitudo (meaning happiness). Jesus mission to the world was to preach that the Kingdom of God is at hand. He did not tack on and, God is really angry so theres going to be hell to pay. In short, Jesus message was not one of retributive justice carried out by a set of state institutions that enforce a religious code for living. So why are conservative Christians, the heirs of Jesus mercy and love, supporting Moses over Jesus? Rejection of the Ten Commandments by courts has contributed to disaffection with the society, belief that Christian values are under attack, and sustained political and legal action on the part of the conservative Christian social movement. Certain, not all conservative Christians would side with Moses on this score, but they are the exceptions to the rule. If others thought about it, they would realize that they are backing the wrong horse, and could make a better argument using the Beatitudes. I would like to see courts argue against a public display of words like blessed are the peacemakers, or (even better) blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Im certain courts would insist that such words would have to be placed within an historical context. But, can you see courts today objecting to consideration of the beatitudes and blessed are the merciful before sentencing, as they did recently when they overturned the decision of a jury that considered the Old Testament during deliberation? So, why then is the punitive justice of Mosaic Law equated with Christian principles when Jesus himself preached peace and mercy, not an eye for an eye? The answer is not that conservative Christians are uncomfortable with a legal status that places them on the outside. Conservatives of all stripes actually feel much more comfortable on the outside of the system then the inside. Once they gain political power they have just as much trouble as any other winners in managing the state and maintaining their principles. The strange part is that they would want to win at all. The images of Mosaic Law are the armies of Israel conquering Canaan, and later the armies of Christian Europe conquering Jerusalem. The image of the Beatitudes is of the suffering Christ on the Cross, put there by the state. If conservative Christians today feel that they have been cut off from government (and their values shunted aside), isnt that what is supposed to happen? Blessed are ye when [men] shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Even more perplexing, if conservative Christians did manage to dominate the institutions of government, why would they want to put the principles of Moses into practice rather than those of Jesus who superseded him? The Ten Commandments are the symbol of a system that while claiming to be Christian (if not in origin, then in practice) in no way resembles the work of Christ. This system endorses a way of living that shows little of the respect for human dignity that is at the heart of Jesus work. Yet its adherents claim to be followers of Christ. So, why do they endorse the eye for an eye logic that Christ himself refutes when constructing a state based on Christian principles? I think the answer lies in ideology and authoritarianism. People prefer the easy answer to the question of who is good and who is bad. Mosaic Law provides the most parsimonious response to both criminal conduct and behavior outside the mainstream. In fact, Mosaic Law (or, at least those parts of it that we like to keep around the stone my mother at the gates of the city part is a bit pass) is applied much more easily and consistently (particularly within the state) than Jesus mercy and peace. From that standpoint, it is more coherent, and almost scientific in its application. There is action, and there is reaction. Law becomes routinized, predictable, and consistent. It is a man-made list of proscriptions, but it ultimately takes on the form of a natural and undeniable force applied unthinkingly and automatically. You do the crime, you do the time. Punishing those whose behavior is offensive makes logical sense from a self-centered point of view. Its supposed to make us feel better when the state carries it out. Retribution restores our faith that, if we behave as the state wants us to behave, we will be protected. For those who behave against the authority of the state, there will be retribution. People demonstrate the same kind of faith in the systems ability to pass judgment in the economic sphere as well. Americans conflate economic success with personal virtue. The difficulty with the legal paradigm based on Mosaic Law is this it is not the work of Jesus. Under the Mosaic Law, justice is imputed citizens are not called upon to evaluate the effectiveness of the system in achieving justice, or its usefulness in establishing social arrangements and distributions of power, wealth, or status. Furthermore, citizens are not required to think carefully about themselves in relation to others. In promoting consistency and uniformity, the law asks no one to be unselfish, to turn the other cheek, or to set aside asserting ones rights against someone else in favor of forgiveness and community with others. This is a way of thinking about life characterized by atomism more in line with scientific theory than with religious doctrine. Unfortunately, in America alternative modes of thinking are difficult to defend in the abstract mainly because they are abstract and have no adherents to defend them. Social scientists recognize this. Jennifer Hochschild argues that we have individualized[7] even personal responsibilities and duties to community. In other words, there must be some individual benefit for Americans if they will endorse policies that require recognition of others rights or needs. Placing the Ten Commandments in courtrooms merely reinforces our ideological attachments, rationalizes a type of justice that is distinctly unchristian, and focuses our attention on what is best for self rather than what is most useful for building the rich human interaction that is the basis for any productive society. Law-abidingness (even when that law is clearly unjust) is considered a sign of virtue, merit and innate goodness. The Ten Commandments are the very embodiment of this kind of justice losers deserve to lose and criminals to be punished, and those who do not conform should experience punishment because nonconformity is a purely personal failing. That is the essence of democratic authoritarianism. As Hochschild notes, there is no absolute reason for envisioning life in this way, it is simply an epistemological choice But to the degree that the focus carries a moral message, it points to a weakness at the very heart [8] of Americanism because we have been deceived into believing its universality. This leaves us few options for evaluating the usefulness of our system of justice. It also explains why it is so hard to argue for the Beatitudes, and why conservative Christians see an ancient law, outmoded by the work of their own savior, as embodying the central tenants of their faith. We can, however, draw two conclusions. First, the tenets of conservative Christianity are based in part on socio-cultural norms and preferences for behavior. Perhaps if conservative Christianity endorsed Christ as its central figure it could make some legitimate claim to universality. But, it has failed to do so. Furthermore, conservative Christianity fails to endorse all Mosaic law, picking and choosing which laws to follow and enforce based solely on what is socially acceptable. Thus, all that can be said about this is that conservative Christians favor a culturally derived sense of justice, that they represent this cultural derived sense of justice as both universally good and related to Christ, but that it actually emanates from the Ten Commandments, a law outmoded by Christ himself. If we can agree on this (and I doubt we will), then perhaps we can begin a public dialogue about what social arrangements and definitions of justice are most useful for promoting social good. Second, conservative Christian social activism could in fact be very useful. It is not the activism that is the problem, but the inconsistencies in the principles underlying that action. Perhaps there is a way to endorse the idea of social change, but fundamentally reshape the values that underlie it. However, this project holds little chance for success because conservative Christians deride the idea that social good should ever be a basis for our decisions. This brings us back to the first conclusion the values espoused by conservative Christians supporting the display of the Ten Commandments are culturally derived and time bound despite claims to the contrary. In the end, conservative Christians are fighting the right battle (for social change) using the wrong list. The Beatitudes at their core are pragmatic. Unlike the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes are distinctly lacking in authoritative commands, dogmatic principles, or rigid standards. Take for instance that portion saying Blessed are the poor in spirit, and Blessed are the meek. Poverty in spirit and meekness are qualities of humility, not dogmatic certitude. One cannot imagine the poor in spirit and the meek leading a crusade to kill the infidel they could never be so certain. Thus, both suggest that lacking dogmatic belief and certitude are appropriate characteristics for followers of Christ. They might read blessed are the humble, who are not so arrogant to believe that they know everything and have the right to impose that knowledge on others. Under this mode of thinking, any religious conviction that cannot tolerate uncertainty and that fears open critical self-examination is a form of idolatry. Thus, the Beatitudes supplant the Ten Commandments by introducing an approach to living that contradicts the old list at every point.
Even more strikingly, the Beatitudes imply that if you want to be successful you cannot act as the Ten Commandments dictate you cannot angrily persecute non-adherents from a list of dos and donts. In fact, such persecution is precisely what those who follow the Beatitudes should expect for themselves. Furthermore, Blessed are the merciful presents us with a range of potentially pragmatic behaviors applied across social institutions. Those who show the mercy of Christ are blessed, not those who impose authoritarian power to punish, or those who impose their ideas about right religion on others or even themselves. Unfortunately, the word righteousness in blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness is too often taken to mean the dogmatic form of religiosity. But, in context with the other Beatitudes, it seems to imply that taking the pragmatic stance (characterized by the qualities of mercy, peace, and poverty in the face of uncertainty) is truly to seek after righteousness, and righteousness itself is seeking the best in life despite its ever changing nature. The Court has struggled to define appropriate standards that safeguard religion from governmental influence while maintaining the free expressive rights of citizens. Beginning with Engel v. Engel and its progeny treat various areas of religion in public life, including public displays such as the one at issue in McCreary County v. ACLU of Kentucky, but also public policies on religious observances by state institutions, state support for religion in public schools, support for religious educational institutions, and recognition of religious beliefs of citizens. Weight Loss Tip: Why You Must Know Exactly What You Want to Look Like

By Melroy Drego Ok, Ive got it: you want to lose weight. Yes, you want to look good naked. But do you know exactly what you want to look like? Maybe, just maybe thats why most people never arrive at their dream( be it a body or a place). Their minds dont know what they really want. They dont know what theyre aiming for.
You want to lose weight but you dont have a clear picture of what you want to look like.
Your poor mind does not know what you want. How can you expect to ever get that body! Remember This: You are never going to make any real progress towards getting the body you want, unless you tell your mind, your real, inner mind called your unconscious mind, what exactly it is that you want. You see, everything we achieve in our lives, we achieve because of our minds. In fact, the (overweight or out-of-shape) state that you have arrived at today, is because of your Mind. Now you may be saying to yourself: I did not set myself the goal of getting my body to look like it does right now! That statement just cant be true! Ok. Look at it this way. Our minds are what are known as goal-seeking servo-mechanisms. That means, our minds need something to strive for, to work for, to achieve. And if we dont set a real goal for our minds, that mind of ours is always striving for goals that others have set for us. And it is always striving for our 'default goals'. And how did these default goals get into our system? Listen: Somewhere, somehow, in our past (or present) environment, we have learnt certain things, quite unconsciously.
We have learnt:

What is True
What is Important to us
What Feels Good

And these Truths, Important things and things that Feel Good set a kind of default goal-set in our unconscious minds. Let me explain with an example that I see happening today, right before my eyes: I know a family, with a young son. That son is already showing the signs of becoming Big.
On more than one occasion, when we went out for pizza with this family, I watched the parents and the son each consume a full pizza. I could not believe my eyes! My 3 kids were hard-pressed putting away 2 slices of the same pizza! My wife and I could hardly eat one pizza between us (and I am a bodybuilder who can eat quite a bit, though I draw the line at pizza...). But this family gobbled up 3+ pizzas like there was no tomorrow! That young boy has unconsciously learnt from his parents the doubtful joy (the 'Feel Good') of eating big amounts of food at one sitting. And it shows in his young body. Unfortunately, it will take quite a bit of work for him to un-learn these lessons, lessons that are being reinforced daily by his family. You see, you already have what I call default goals in your unconscious mind. These default goals have been programmed into your mind from way back when through your immediate family and other influential people (your friends, school, etc). And even one of those default goals could have brought you to your current body shape, where you need to lose weight to live to see your children graduate from Grade 2! Remember this: It is your unconscious mind that really guides your body and your life, long-term. Therefore, it is very important for you, especially if you want to tip yourself in favour of losing weight, to have a clear goal for what you want your body to be. You see, a Strong, Clear Goal of your New Body, will over-ride your default goals, and set a new direction for you, so that you automatically start out on losing weight. You have to have a clear picture of yourself, sitting right in front of your mind: "This is what I want to look like with my New Body". If you want to lose weight and get a great body, then you must have this picture constantly in your mind, not only now while you are reading this article. And once you inform your subconscious about this body that you are targeting, you are going to lose weight until you look like that body. Almost automatically. So, as part of todays Weight Loss Tip, lets set about getting a clear picture for yourself. Get out all the magazines you have in your cupboard under the stairs.
Leaf through the magazines. Tear out large images of the best bodies for display in those magazines. If you like those pictures, they are in the running for what you consider to be a great body. Make sure that these pictures are very scantily clothed (and your gossip magazines are sure to have many images along those lines). You should be able to see pretty much all of the body (so that you can give your mind a very clear idea of what it must head for.) Line up your pictures next to each other and then select the 3 best pictures. Remember, you need to be able to see the bodies clearly, so these should be the largest pictures you can find. Can you find any that are all-round views of the same beautiful body? Then thats the body (and the set of pictures) you choose! Now stick those pictures up on a board in your private room, in a position that you can see every day. And from today, for the next 60 days (or until you are sure your mind is set in the right direction), look at that collection of pictures for 2 minutes every morning, and 2 minutes each evening before going to bed. And while you look at those pictures, say to yourself: That is the body I want for myself. And I am taking action right now, each day, to get myself that body. And watch yourself take action to lose weight, and start moving in the direction of your fantastic body! This weight loss tip alone is worth its weight in gold to you. Now get cracking! Put this tip into practice, right now! Living By Faith

By Anthony Smith Living by Faith, in Jesus above, Trusting, Confiding, in His Great Love, from all harm safe, in His sheltering arms, I'm living by Faith and feel no alarm. Fine words from a song that I and my family have sung many times. I see multitudes in other countries, from Africa, the Philippines to India, that have very little, according to man. Money is scarce, food, lodging, even clothing. Many are lost without anyone to turn to, many are relying on idols, friends, neighbors and other countries to come to their aid. In these same countries, from the dry deserts, to the high mountains, I see pockets of Christians, still living by faith, not knowing where their next meal is coming from but knowing that Jesus promised that He would never leave them nor forsake them. Can I or anyone alleviate this poverty? Can anyone cure the unbalance of wealth in this world? The answer is, no. We all have been given a life, a destiny, that was ordained by God, many suffer because they have rejected the living God and have turned to Idols, this being on their own decision, and many others are low, but have not been forsaken. Its easy to say that, you will be rewarded in Heaven, but even that does not alleviate their condition on this earth. Even with many charities around the world giving and giving, to help the poor and starving, it takes just as much or even more to send this aid, as was given to buy the food and clothing that is being delivered. From corruption to theft, much of this aid is not even reaching the people that it was intended to reach. So then what is the answer? 2Co 11:26-31; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;
In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.
Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.
Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?
If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.
The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not. These infirmities are not just located in one country or another, but rather these things are happening around the world. Hunger, famine, petulance and many other things that can kill the body. Millions are suffering, but why?
Psa 34:10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.
Nations and multitudes are not seeking the things that are above but are seeking only those things that are below. Am I ashamed by the life and destiny that God has delivered unto me? No, not by any means, for there is reasoning behind every thing that God does. Have I compassion on those that are without? Yes, for if I have not compassion, then how could the Love of God dwell within me? Can I change the world and feed millions? No. For I am just a man. For it is written; they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing. Luke 6:21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
I bring to you no idle words, that will not feed, cloth nor bring about salvation, but I brings words of, Trust, Faith, Hope and Deliverance. These are not my words nor promises, but these are the words of Jesus Christ.
The heathen do not know the Lord, they do not Trust in the Lord, they do not Seek the Lord, but I pray that you do. For as it is also written; Mat 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Many have exchanged their soul for the things of this world, Yes, even those that are still suffering famine and petulance. I speak not just of money, but of the pleasures of the flesh, the pleasures of a moment, the filling of even a meal to satisfy the body, for even this is noted in Scripture. Heb 12:16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
For can we not endure that which was commanded? Do we only look for what God gives us today, or are we dissatisfied with Him so that we look to gather up and store up for tomorrow, knowing fare well that tomorrow may not come? Will we be as the Israelites tried, gathering manna above what God had instructed, only to have it turn to maggots over night? Who is our source, who is our supply, who gives us our daily bread, put cloths upon our backs, and shelters us from the buffeting of Satan? Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Job 5:20 In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword. When we who believe in Christ come upon, tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, or sword, we have a strong hand that leads us and guides us, threw the fires of life. We may hunger here, we may even die by war, but when those that have all, who never hunger, never go naked, never want of any good thing of this life, who have not the Spirit of God within them go to be judged, we shall be filled, and clothed and made Kings and Priest before God, while they who have turned their back on the Living God, suffer in torments for eternity. Will we then have satisfaction on the punishments on those that have rejected us in this life? No. For they were deceived by sin and Satan, we will not be looking for satisfaction, but if it were possible, we would grieve over them for their destiny in Hell. 1Co 4:10-14; We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye are honourable, but we are despised.
Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;
And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it:
Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day. I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
Being followers of Christ does not secure us from many trials and problems in this world, for we are not of this world but of a world to come. We may suffer hunger, but only for a time, we may suffer persecution, but wasn't even Jesus hated and crucified on the Cross? Can we not trust in God, can we not accept our lives as was given to us, and use our state to convince others of a better way, a better life, a better salvation? I ask these things of you to build up your most Holy Faith in God and His Christ. Famine will come, even greater than it is today, war and persecution will also come, at a level that was never seen before, but we as believers in Christ will, I say again, Will be delivered, will be saved, will be made inheritors of this world. Be strong in faith my Brothers and Sisters, there is coming a day, when Christ will split the eastern sky, look up, you redemption is drawing near. Ars. Temple of Spirit & Truth Ministries

No Relationship Can Exist Without Love

By Julia Jones Maintaining relationships is the art of living. A relationship between the man and the woman is the most beautiful relationship yet very delicate. It is easily broken than made. There are innumerable ways to make you relationship exciting and let there be love in the air. A good relationship involves care, responsibility, fun, laughter, love and sex. It is an amalgamation of all. Any one element missing in a relationship spoils the charm of a relationship. Marriages help couples learn to live in a covenantal relationship. It focuses on each other and their commitment. In a marriage the relationship is full of understanding and acceptance of each other. Yet there are times when couples in a marriage face problems. As time passes by they seem to divert from each other. Many couples experience marital difficulties with the passage of time. There is less of love, intimacy and sex. They feel a kind of boredom with each other. Love is essential in a relationship. No relationship can exist without love. You have to make love to keep your relationship alive. Intimacy is very important to keep a relationship alive and so is passion Physical intimacy is important in a relationship. You should not give up your sex lives as your relationship grows older. Most of the times when one of the partners fall sick and is not well for a long duration, couples do not have sex. Touch is an essential part in a relationship and one should have a complete and satisfied sex life with a lot of care and affection. Whenever you make a mistake, make the use of the power of touch. The power of touch heals the wounds and is a good remedy for the sick. The ability to communicate with each other in a significantly deeper and more fulfilling way is an important factor in a relationship. All that is necessary is a commitment to each other and a willingness to work towards a stronger and more meaningful future together. Communication is the best way to know where the problem lies. Communication gap worsens the relationship. Unless and until you talk over about the problem you will never be able to make up for the broken relation. You have to take the initial step to come up to your partner to talk about where you went wrong. When you share your opinion and feelings with your partner it develops a greater understanding. It helps your partner understand your unacceptable behavior at times. If you feel your partner shows no more interest in a sex with you then talk about it. The more you communicate with each other the closer you get to each other. There is nothing to hide. Even the best relationships sometimes undergo bad phases in life. It could be misunderstanding, arguments or lack of interest in each other. Love relationships often undergo such phases in life. Love relationships and sex are inseparable. Where there is a love relationship sex has to be present. If your sex life is fading away and you do not feel like having sex with each other then your relationship needs some counseling as you may me undergoing some kind of complex or problem. It could be anything taking too much of alcohol, having a negative feeling about you, low self esteem or some guilt. Whatever the reason you need to solve the problem as your relationship is important and needs all the elements to make it successful. Tips To Use Less Water In Your Thriving Organic Food Garden

By Julie Williams Water is arguably our most precious resource. All living things need water to survive. But we dont just want our productive organic food gardens to survive, we want them to thrive! And a growing plant uses a lot more water than one that is just surviving. Every part of the plant growing process uses water. When plants start to become dehydrated they stop photosynthesising, close their stomata, stop taking in nutrients and stop growing. It can take a few days for some plants to recover even if there has been no tissue damage. So it is vitally important not to let your plants become dehydrated (just like yourself). Not enough water can kill or stunt your plants. Sometimes mild water stress can be a good thing, as it encourages plants to send their roots down deeper into the soil, making them more drought tolerant. The aim is to use as little water as possible without causing stress. Ways to use less water 1. Create soils that are made up of humus and organic matter. These soils can hold lots of water and plants can easily draw it up. It has great water-holding capacity as well as having a high nutrient content. 2. Mulch the soil surface. This reduces evaporation, keeping the underlying soil moist for longer. Any mulch is better than no mulch, even if its underfelt (the older kinds are safer) or newspaper. This also prevents soil erosion. 3. Use drip irrigation preferably under the mulch or soil surface. There are purpose made recycled hoses available now that are perfect for the job. You can save up to 90% by using drip irrigation rather than a sprinkler. 4. Only water when it is needed and as much as is needed. If youre not sure, try the finger test. Yes poke your finger into the soil to see if it is moist or dry. Make sure the water penetrates as deep as the roots, but its a waste to water any deeper than that. 5. If you live where summers are really hot, plant crops under partial shade. It could be shade from a pergola or tall plants such as sweet corn. These are simple methods to reduce your water consumption. You could also consider collecting your own water. If we all had rain-water tanks attached to our houses it would not only give us clean, free water, but would reduce the amount of water that ends up in our storm water drains. It is also much better for food gardens as mains water is often high in salts, chlorine and fluoride. Re-use of grey water is also another way to reduce how much water we consume. It can be used on lawns and other plants in the garden that are not for food production. Hi, I am an avid organic gardener and am known by my friends as the recycling queen. I live on a small country property in South Australia. It is my mission to encourage as many people as possible to start organic gardening. This will improve both our individual lives and the wellbeing of our personal and global environments. Please visit my website and get your free 3 part Composting Guide. Are You Really Listening During Your Interview?

By Lee Dobbins We all know that answering questions about yourself is the main purpose of a job interview but did you know that listening is just as important as talking? In order to properly answer the questions asked, you need to know what the interviewer is fishing for in an answer and the way to do that is to actively listen to what he or she is saying. When you practice active listening you can give complete answers that will impress the speaker. Say for example, you are on an interview and are asked if you have any problems multitasking. You might simply answer no. But avoiding one word answers is key to successful interviewing. Now if you were really listening to what the interviewer wanted you might answer by saying Depending on my level of commitment to other projects I do like to work on more than one at a time. This can save the company money as well as make for an interesting day. In a job interview, you need to set yourself apart from the crowd. Thats why you need to be specific in your answers - without rambling on and on. Another thing that will really set you apart is to talk in a language that company executives understand - money language. That means to try to tie in how hiring you will be good for the companies bottom line. In order to answer these types of interview questions, you need to develop what is called active listening skills. Just like everyday speaking is not exactly the same as public speaking; listening is not the exactly same as active listening. Active listening is comprised of two parts: analysis and the response to what is being said. An active listener shows he is interested by maintaining eye contact as well as good posture. He leans slighting in towards to speaker as if to hang on every word. During the interview, the listener nods, smiles and takes notes. Be ware, however, that a daydreamer or pseudolistener, can adopt these behaviors. So a listeners physical response does not necessarily mean good listening skills are at work. Nonverbal communication, more than just the nod or smile, is important. Gestures, appearance, timing, voice responses, facial expressions, spatial distance all affect how the speaker (or interview) interprets the listener. So a person preparing for a job or work project interview should consider the cultural climate and norms of society of the interviewer. In short, perceived active listening based on nonverbal signals can vary from culture to culture. Successful active listeners paraphrase (restate the question using their own words) and then come up with a summary of the main issues. A silent listener is not a good active listener. To be a good listener you must ask intelligent questions. Repeating what the speaker has said but using different words and asking is this what you mean? will let the speaker know you understand the message he is trying to get across. Lee Dobbins write on many topics. Please visit her site on Moving where you can find more about successful interviewing. By Nick Warren Sandpits (also known as sandboxes) are an important part of many playgrounds, and can provide hours of imaginative and constructive play activity. A well designed and constructed sandpit will provide years of enjoyment and repay your investment many times over. Yet all too often, sandpits in commercial playgrounds are poorly designed with adverse effects on their users.
This article offers a guide to helping you maximise the potential of your sandpit. Although this guide is aimed at assisting commercial playground operators, there are lots of hints that will prove useful when constructing a sandpit in the backyard at home. Step 1. Location
Take some time to study the layout of your playground carefully. Ideally your new sand pit should be located in a quite play space, ideally in a shaded area which will not interfere with open play space or other activities. If shade is not available, you may need to consider erecting a shade structure above the sandpit. If you are installing shade think carefully about the positioning of the support poles so they will not interfere with play space or softfall areas. If you are using a tree for your shade be sure to choose a location where tree roots will not damage your sandpit. Often playgrounds have large areas of woodchips for safe play areas. Yet placing a sandpit in the vicinity of a woodchip play area will mean your sandpit will soon be full of woodchips. If this is your only choice, then try to think strategically of ways to combat the spread of woodchips such as by creating a barrier made from natural grass or synthetic surfacing, or creative use of timber decking. Remember that despite your best efforts, sand will escape from the confines of the sandpit, so you should aim to reduce the effect of sand spillage as much as possible. For example spillage of dry sand onto a concrete pathway, can cause the surface to become extremely slippery and a potentially dangerous OHS issue. Applying a wetpour rubbersurface may be necessary to prevent this effect. You should also ensure there is sufficient space between your sandpit and the entrance of any nearby buildings to prevent sand from entering inside. In assessing location, look for ways to incorporate your sandpit into an existing playground feature or into the natural landscaping of your playground. It may fit snugly against an existing retaining wall, or be incorporated around a rock feature, so think creatively. Remember that although a sandpit may be out of the way, it should still be clearly visible to allow easy supervision of play. One often overlooked aspect in considering location is access. Remember that your sandpit will need to be filled up periodically, and wheel barrowing 8 tonne of sand is hard work. If direct vehicular access is not possible, look for alternate ways to create access such as removing fence panels, or seek permission to gain access from neighbouring properties. In order to keep your sand hygienic, it will need to be topped up periodically, or replaced with fresh clean immediately in the advent of contamination by animals. Thoughtfulness at the design stage can save lots of hard work later. Warning. If you have an existing synthetic play surface such as rubber or synthetic grass around your sandpit site, do not use an excavator or small bobcat to carry sand across it. Despite what the excavator driver may say, the machine is very likely to damage the surfaceing, and repair work is difficult and costly. If this is the case in your playground, then you will have to resort to the tried and tested method of the wheelbarrow and shovel. Step 2. Design Size
The surface area size of your sandpit will be dependant upon the number of users, available space and budget, as well as the range of alternative play activities. Ideally it should be a minimum of at least 500 mm deep. Shape
Once you have chosen your location and size think about what shape design will work best in your location. Sandpits can be almost any shape including circular, kidney, oval or square.
Your design should consider ease of access for users. Preferablly the sandpit walls will be sunk entirely into the ground, or be built with low entry spots to provide easy access. Ideally, sandpits should have a flat lip around their perimeter. This may be used for seats as well as providing a flat surface for playing with toys and a shelf for building on. The lip should be clearly defined and easily seen so that it will not become a potential trip hazard. It also serves to provides an easy sweep area, for sweeping overflowing sand back. Materials
Sandpits are usually constructed from timber, concrete, pavers or brick blocks depending on what material is best suited the site. If you use timber, be careful not to use timber which has been treated with CCA (Copper Chromium Arsenic). Ask your supplier for alternative treated timber such as ACQ or use hardwoods.
Covering the structural component of the sandpit with wet pour rubber is the ideal solution to providing safe edging, although synthetic grass may also be used. When designing your sandpit ensure that edges are rounded or at least bevelled, to reduce the potential for impact injuries. Drainage
Drainage is another important factor to prevent your sandpit from becoming a swimming pool in times of heavy rain. Furthermore a well drained sandpit will mean that the sand is washed and freshened by the rain, resulting in more hygienic sandpit. 150mm of loose rocks or aggregate should be used at the bottom of the sandpit to prevent water build up and can be used to drain away the water. You will also need a barrier between the sand and the drainage rock material to prevent children digging down to the rocks. The barrier should be made of a porous material such as geotech fabric, rubber or perforated synthetic grass. Step 3.The Construction Process Once you have your design, you can either build the sandpit yourself, or outsource the work to a professional tradesperson. Landscapers, builders, concreters, carpenters or playground specialists are the best place to start your enquiries depending on the scope of works. Ask around at other commercial playgrounds and get recommendations from operator who can recommend a tradesperson from a similar project. Ideally your chosen company should have a track record in similar projects. When you are obtaining quotes, provide a plan or sketch of your design as well as a written list of your criteria. This will ensure that everybody is quoting on the same specifications. Arrange to meet the tradesman onsite and remember to ask for their feedback and ideas as well. Often a professional tradesman may be able to offer excellent ideas or practical perspectives which you may not have have thought of. Step 4. The Sandpit Cover
Once your sandpit is completed, it is important that your sandpit is securely covered when not in use, to prevent leaves, dirt and animal contamination which can spread disease. A shade and sail maker can provide you with a sturdy, commercial grade cover, which will allow water through, yet still keep animals out. You can have your cover professionally fitted and installed, or you can save money by installing it yourself, and having the sail maker customise it from your measurements. If your sandpit is an irregular shape, a very useful tip is to take a large piece of black plastic (available at your local hardware shop) and stretch it over the sandpit using weights to hold it in place. You can now use scissors or a marking pen to trace the required shape, thereby making an exact template of your cover. Fold this up and take it to your local shade and sail maker. This is often more accurate and simpler, than trying to measure an irregular shaped sandpit with unusual angles. An excellent idea is to have the sail maker sew a length of chain in the hem of the cover. This will weigh the cover down and hold it securely in place when the sandpit is not in use. An alternative method is to have the sail maker sew eyelets at strategic points and to use clips and elastic rope to secure it to the sandpit sides. Step 5. Looking After your Sandpit A well designed sandpit will need far less maintenance than one which has been poorly designed; however some basic upkeep is still required. Raking your sandpit regularly will help to airate the sand as well as remove leaves and other debris. Airing the sand is important as fresh air serves as a disinfectant. Disinfecting your sandpit by hand will be required when they are obviously dirty. An easy method is to use a mild detergent diluted in water in a watering can, although the best wat to guarantee your sand is clean and hygienic is to remove the top layer of sand (or all of it if it is really dirty) and top it up with fresh clean sand. Following these steps will ensure that your new sandpit will be an asset to your playground and an investment in the lives of the children you care for. Copyright Nick Warren 2007. Obesity Implants -- FDA Approval Likely in 2007

By Michael Smith, MD The obesity implant "tricks" the nerve cells lining the stomach to release a chemical signal that tells the brain the stomach is full. Feeling stuffed, you stop eating. The end result...calorie restriction and weight loss. What's an Obesity Implant and How Does it Work? A small electrical device, similar to a computer chip, is implanted under the skin just below the rib cage. Two wires from the implant connect to the outer wall of the stomach and deliver a low-level electrical current, when activated by muscle contractions. The electrical current triggers the release of a chemical signal which tells the brain that the stomach is full. The impulse may also cause the stomach muscle to relax and distend as if full of food, tricking the body into feeling full. Researchers hope the obesity implant can regulate appetite signals and boost metabolism. The devices currently used in Europe are intended for severely obese individuals. However, several biotechnology companies are developing obesity implants for the mildly obese individual. In the U.S, clinical studies are in the early phases and focus on collecting safety data and overall effectiveness. It's too early to draw any conclusions, but the results look promising for some obesity implants to be approved for use in the U.S in 2007. Early reports of one clinical trial estimates that obesity implants will help one-third to one-half of obese patients. But among those who do have success with the implant, the average patient has lost about 40 percent of excess body weight. Potential Benefits from Implants First, obesity implants could offer a low-risk alternative to major bariatric surgery. Surgery is expensive, costing $20,000 or more, and it carries a significant risk for serious medical complications and death. Some estimates show that one in every 200 patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery dies. Secondly, if the devices are truly effective in restricting calories, they could play a role in treating certain eating disorders and regulating blood-sugar levels in diabetic patients. One company is currently recruiting patients for a trial involving obese people with diabetes. The objective is to gauge how weight loss affects diabetes and how the obesity implants might regulate certain hormones, like insulin. Conclusion Obesity implants look promising as low-risk alternatives to surgery. Other benefits might include treating eating disorders and diabetes. To Healthy Living! Michael A. Smith, MD

Relationship Advice: Marriage Counseling for a Healthy Relationship

By Steve Roberts How do you know when it's time for marriage counseling? Easy. Are you in a relationship, even a good one? Then it is time. Years ago my wife and I participated in an organization called "Marriage Encounter," which emphasized communication techniques. I've always liked its motto: "Making Good Marriages Even Better!" That's what I hope to emphasize for you today. It's time to make your good relationship even better! And how do I suggest you do that? If you have a relationship that is doing pretty good and doesn't really need any help, then I want you to go to Marriage Counseling! You may think that counseling is only for problems, but that's not so. People without all those nasty problems can use the process to create far better lives than they ever imagined. I so love it when a couple comes to me just to grow. I'll admit that this is usually not the case. It usually takes pain to get people through my office door. But, occasionally, couples come to me just to make their good relationship even better. What fun that is! So, what does a couple do in therapy if they have no problems to work on? There are SO many things we can do: -Develop even more sophisticated communication abilities -Use psychological instruments (tests) to determin differences, simularities, and how to complement each other's personality gifts -Seek spiritual growth together -Take time out from the busy-ness of life and become clear on what your common goals are and how you want to get there -Strategize how you will handle holiday get-togethers with in-laws and other relatives that are not that pleasant to be with And this is just the beginning. There is so much we can do to improve these marvelous relationships we've been given. Is it worth the cost? I think of it in terms of the old question at the end of life: Will you wish you had spent more time at work, or more time on your family and marriage? For most of us, the answer is clear. There is nothing in the end more important than our relationships to the people we treasure. The cost of taking yourselves to a counselor and working on life together is really nothing compared to the lifetime of joy and wonder that is possible with your partner. The grocery bill, the car payments, the mortgage, the clothes for the kids and the thousands of other things we feel we must spend our money on will all argue against this couple counseling opportunity. However, I suggest that it is not an issue of whether you can afford it, but whether you can afford to not do it. Is your relationship really good enough for you, or do you wonder if there is more? Go for it! Grab all the love and togetherness you can get! And use a counselor to help you see what you may be missing.
