Often the mercenary attitude is so subtle that were not even aware were giving off bad vibes. So, what exactly is a job mercenary? Here are five hints. Could this be you? 1. Believing the employers cause is good only as long as the money is good. 2. Harboring a resentment that youre dependent upon an employer. 3. Lacking an inner job motivation. 4. Holding back or being ambivalent about loyalty to the organization. 5. More concerned about what I get out of it that what I bring to the table? Rhinoplasty, or nose jobs have health benefits beyond the aesthetic appeals of the procedure. In many cases, rhinoplasty can substantially improve breathing difficulties. Rhinoplasty can alleviate this, along with snoring problems associated with constricted nasal passages. Many people who have persistent sinus problems have remedied the issue with rhinoplasty. A study performed at the Mayo clinic reviewed data from 250 women who had undergone face lifts in the 70s. The data showed that on average, women who received face lifts outlived their counterparts in the general population by 10 years. The self esteem factors attributed to looking and feeling younger as a result of the face lift are cited as possible reasons why these patients lived longer. Eyelid surgery known as blepharoplasty is a procedure to remove fat--usually along with excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. While the procedure does have cosmetic benefits, it can also provide real health benefits to those who have vision problems caused by excess skin around the eyelids. Gastric Bypass surgery, while not often considered cosmetic surgery can be viewed as a surgery to improve appearances. Like liposuction, it reduces an individuals weight through surgical means. However, the health benefits of losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight are well documented and accepted. Losing weight is a perfect example of how health benefits and aesthetic benefits can both result from the same surgical procedures. Most who have significant dental problems will view fixing those problems as a mandatory concern. Braces were once considered strange, but now are commonplace. People who lose teeth in accidents dont think twice about the vanity associated with replacing those teeth. Indeed, they argue that replacing broken or lost teeth is necessary for healthy eating function, as well as restoring appearance. Improving speech through dentistry has been long accepted for its benefits, and without the taboos associated with many cosmetic surgery procedures. Cosmetic surgery is not just for vain people who want to improve their aesthetic appeal. In many cases, the real benefits of cosmetic surgery make the aesthetic improvements just an added bonus when compared to the health benefits the procedures can provide. The Three Businesses You're Really In
By Joe Love You may think youre in the software business, but thats not all. You may think youre in the retail business but theres more to it than retailing. You may consider yourself to be in the manufacturing business, but youre more than merely a manufacturer. No matter what business your business card or Web site says youre engaged in, youre really in three businesses: your primary business, the marketing business, and the people business. Every business in the world must sell what it is offering. When that happens, youre in the marketing business. If you havent realized that before, you need to clearly understand this before your business can succeed. Youve got to market what you sell to your employees, to your salespeople, to your distributors, and suppliers, and most importantly to your customers. All these people can help you move your business forward. It is important that you focus on your primary business to create quality, value and desirability. Instead of focusing on diversification and expansion, your focus should be on finding way that you can better serve your niche market. This is where many businesses fail. They always want to expand and diversify before they have first become the best in their niche market. For example, in the early 90s Gerber Baby Food put their name on other items created for babies, non-food items. They thought because of the Gerber name that they could succeed in any baby-related field. It ended up costing them millions of dollars in losses to realize that the Gerber name was related to baby food only and not to babies. Their failure to focus on their niche was an extremely expensive mistake. Another example was when Coca-Cola decided to go outside the soft drink industry and purchase a winery. Coke thought they were experts in all beverages, but they found out they were wrong. The winery failed and coke ended up selling it. They learned that just because they were experts in the soft-drink industry that didnt make them experts in every other beverage business. The important lesson here is that if youre going to be successful, you must focus 100% of your attention on your business. Instead of diluting your focus on diversity and expansion, you should be sharpening your marketing skills as well as your people skills. As you are always in the marketing business, you are always in the people business as well. Even if you have a Web site where you do nothing but affiliate marketing or you work in an office with no customer contact you still at some point will have contact with other people. The people around you, such as your employees, salespeople, and distributors must sense your enthusiasm, share your vision, and get onto your wavelength. People must be aware of why they should purchase what youre selling. If you lack crucial people skills, all the best marketing in world wont help you because it is real people who will end up buying or not buying what you offer. If you dont know what turns them on, you wont be successful. When you focus on your business the majority of that focus needs to be on your marketing. You have to become as much as an expert in marketing as you are in your own field. This is never more evident than with a Web site. Unless you know marketing and the need for fast response time, individual attention, and continually fresh online presence, having a Web site will only be an invitation to frustration. Even if youre an expert in the field of marketing, if you dont know people, youre in for a lot of trouble. People make the product. People provide the service. People buy your product. People purchase your service. No matter what you do or produce, eventually it all comes down to people. If you dont know that youre in the people business, you will not succeed. The key to success in business today is no longer mass marketing. Instead, its individual marketing. How Visualization Can Help You Lose Weight
By Virgil Aponte Recently I read an amazing article from Personal Trainer Tony Books Avilez of The Body House. Tony's an amazing author and trainer and made some excellent points about the power of the mind when it comes to achieving your health and fitness goals. Many fitness experts fail to convey this to their clients or people that learn from them.
In fact Tony actually recommends that this is the first place you should start when beginning or continuing a health and fitness program. My favorite point is that of motivation in that many people say they don't exercise because they can't find the time. He talks about Donald Trump promising you 10 million dollars if you participate in a health and fitness regimen while still maintaining family and business obligations. In this case I don't think there is a person in the world that would not find time to exercise then. Do you? Tony goes on to say that it's not time that's a problem but motivation which made great sense. Also remember that in the short term and long term exercise will save you money and aggravation. Health costs associated with LOE (Lack of Exercise) only go up as you age and haven't taken care of yourself. With that in mind here is an excellent technique you can use right away to help you with the mental aspect of your health and fitness program: Create a vision in your mind of how you want to look or want to accomplish: For example how will you look when you lose 15 pounds or how will you look in those jeans you can't fit in anymore. And I really mean sit down, lie down or stand up somewhere, close your eyes and visualize how you will actually look. Here's a little story about how I visualized training professional athletes which was a big goal of mind for many years: I would just imagine getting off the train in the Bronx on my way to work at Yankee Stadium. If you've ever been to Yankee Stadium for a game you can feel a giant buzz of energy as soon as you get off the train because of the thousands of people there in anticipation for the days game. In this visualization there is no buzz because there are a lot less people. Every time I think about the power of visualization I think about that very instant speaking with T-Spoon and that there is a great deal to be said about the power of your mind. So the next thing for you is to vividly think what you want to achieve and your mind will move you to that goal. Spring Rose Care - The Easy Way
By Alan Summers Spring rose care will help get your roses off to a more enjoyable blooming season. Modern roses are the longest blooming of all shrubs. Many varieties start flowering in mid-late spring, with recurrent bloom cycles through late fall. Unless you are looking to grow absolutely perfect blossoms for competitive exhibition, roses actually require much less work than you may usually read about. Carefully chosen varieties of shrub roses will - with no summer spraying - yield a full seasons bounty of blooms. Spring Rose Care - Timing
Spring rose care should be accomplished after winterkill (if any) has become apparent, but before the new leaves unfurl. There are several ways to figure this. Ive found it is most successful to work on the roses just as the Forsythia starts to bloom, rather than slavishly following the calendar. Spring Rose Care - Feeding
If you hilled-up your roses with mulch last fall, the first thing you need to do is to tear down the mulch mounds and spread it around the roses so that the total mulch depth never exceeds 1 inches. If you have more, remove the top layer. The first spring rose care fertilization consists of four different products, a handful of each should be sprinkled around the plant in a circle, about 12-18 inches out from the stem: Espoma Rose-Tone, Espoma Kelp Meal, Espoma Epson Plus and Greensand (Five additional feedings, a month apart, consist of just one handful of Rose-Tonenothing else Never feed after September 1st; late feeding encourages late emergence of tender growth, which will be winterkilled). At any rate, spring rose care pruning is not difficult if you keep the following points in mind: You will need five good tools: sharp by-pass pruners, by-pass loppers, small pruning saw, elbow length (gauntlet) leather or rubber/plastic impregnated gloves, and safety goggles. Over-pruning roses in spring tends to weaken the plant. Never prune away more than one-third of the live growth. On all roses, remove diseased, dead and broken canes. A cane that has blackened from winterkill, or suffered physical damage, should be shortened to an inch below the offending section. Where possible, cut on a 45 degree angle. Once-blooming (as opposed to recurrent-blooming) roses require no further pruning in the spring. These are primarily antique roses and old-fashioned ramblers. Do whatever additional pruning necessary after blooming in early July. Reduce hybrid tea roses to 4-5 vigorous canes not shorter than 30 inches. Grandifloras should be reduced to 5-6 canes not shorter than 36 inches. Reduce floribundas to 7 to 8 canes not shorter than 24 inches. In general, try to achieve a vase-shaped plant for most roses in these categories. Especially on hybrid teas and grandifloras, cut 1/4 inch above an outward facing bud. Cut so the 45 degree angle allows water to drain away from, rather than into the bud. Mini roses, shrub roses, rugosa roses and repeat blooming antique roses just need a haircut, trimming them to size. Treat English roses and romantica roses as grandifloras. Trim modern climbing roses and pillar roses to shape. Aged canes should be removed, as should those that grow away from the support or criss-cross awkwardly. Massive rejuvenation pruning is best postponed until early July and done, if at all, every 3 to 5 years. To prevent cane borer, put a dab of Nubark Rose Stick on the cut wound of any cut branch greater than pencil thickness. Mixing the lime sulphur with horticultural oil will control a broader range of pests. To achieve full effectiveness from the oil, this spray must be applied on a day when it is not going to freeze the following night. Spray the roses to the dripping point and spray all the surrounding mulch. This spray must be applied when the roses are still dormantbefore they start to leaf out. During the next few days, top dress with enough mulch so that total coverage is 2 to 2 inches. As roses leaf out, occasionally they are troubled by green aphids on the tips. Couple Hikes The Sierra Nevada For Depression Awareness
By Irene Watson Today we are pleased to talk to Jeff Alt, author of A Hike for Mike. The book is a true-life adventure of a couple who trekked the John Muir Trail as a depression awareness campaign. Hello Jeff. Irene: What inspired you to write your second book, A Hike for Mike, a true life adventure?
Jeff: I knew I had a story that readers would be interested in and I had such a positive experience with my first book, A Walk For Sunshine. I received hundreds of letters from readers complimenting me and asking when my next book was coming out. A Walk For Sunshine received a book award, excellent reviews, and has sold through five printings. I just had to write another. But the real inspiration to write A Hike For Mike came after the tragic suicidal death of my brother-in-law Mike due to untreated depression. Thousands of people across the country followed our Hike For Mike depression awareness campaign across the Sierra Nevada and we received hundreds of heartfelt letters from folks all over the country; even Europe. Our journey had struck a chord. A Hike For Mike, the book, seemed to be a natural sequel to A Walk For Sunshine. Irene: Why do you believe this was an important book for you to write?
Jeff: A Hike For Mike demonstrates how taking a walk in the woods can be such a fun and healing experience. The book allowed me to take the reader from where I left the Appalachian Trail into the journey of marriage and then back to the woods with my wife. The book has allowed us to help others by not only sharing our healing yet entertaining journey but also educating readers of the symptoms and treatment options for depression. On a professional level, A Hike For Mike helped me get beyond the one book author funk. My goal is to continue writing and speaking about my adventures and the philanthropic causes they benefit. Irene: Deep inside, when you decided to make the trek of 218 miles across the Sierra Nevada, what were you wanting to achieve on a personal level?
Jeff: I wanted to help Beth work through the loss of her brother Mike. I also felt it was important to continue to enjoy our lives together in spite of such tragedy, and I knew the trail would help accomplish this. Beth and I walked down the wedding aisle four years prior but we had never taken a long hike together. I walked the entire 2,160 mile Appalachia Trail, chronicled in my first book, A Walk For Sunshine, and I asked myself Whats next? What can top the Appalachian Trail? Answer: The John Muir Trail accompanied by my wife. Although the distance of the JMT was much shorter than the AT, what we accomplished in our relationship was huge and cant be measured with a pedometer. Irene: Your wife, Beth, took the journey with you. How would this experience been different for you if she didnt go with you?
Jeff: Beth and I bonded nomadically living in the woods together for the better part of a month. Not many couples can say theyve done that. We shared romantic sunsets. We ate out of the same dish. We became an efficient team as friends, husband and wife, and as hikers. We had no TV, newspaper, or radio; just each other. We learned the power of humor. We learned that each of us have strengths and weaknesses and that we must take turns being the engine and the caboose even in the woods. We worked through an adverse situation together. Beth proved that she was a survivor not a victim. Our hike made our marriage stronger. We would have never discovered this aspect of our relationship if Beth had not hiked with me. Irene: You just mentioned that Beth proved she was a survivor not a victim. What do you believe changed within her to let go of being a victim?
Jeff: When Beth committed to walking the John Muir Trail to raise awareness for depression she became a survivor. Beth knew that her brothers death was most likely the result of untreated depression. Even though she couldnt bring Mike back, she could help prevent someone else suffering from untreated depression to get treatment and avoid a potentially suicidal outcome. Beth saw the hike as a tangible vehicle to help heal from her brothers death and she was inspired by the fact that our hike would help prevent another needless death and help others realize they could live fulfilling lives instead of living under the cloud of untreated depression. Irene: Were you a victim before the trek? If so, explain what changes occurred in you to also become a survivor.
Jeff: I wasnt a victim. I had known Mike about four years and usually only saw him a few times a year. But, Mike and Beth had grown up together. They were close. Beth was the maid of honor in Mikes wedding a few years before I came into the picture. I saw myself as more of a survivor coach. I wanted my wife to be happy again. I hated to see her so sad. I pulled from my own near death experience in order to help Beth move forward in survivor mode. Irene: Why do you believe that accomplishing a goal is an important aspect of healing?
Jeff: When tragedy strikes, its important to move forward. Working towards a goal takes courage and helps you focus to the future. And not get stuck in the past. Its important to realize that life will get better with time. Irene: When people are in a middle of a tragedy they often cannot see getting past the situation. What encouragement would you give them?
Jeff: Tragedy such as losing a loved one is hard. I dont really have all the answers. Grief counseling may be a good start. Beth and I learned:
the pain will ease with time.
Its ok to laugh.
Focus on the good memories.
Treat yourself well.
