The School Advanced Level

By Sharon White A-level study greatly differs from general secondary education study. It is much more like the study at college or university. A-level students have much more freedom in study as the most important criteria for A-level education assessment is its graduation exams scores rather than different activities during the study year. The freedom which would attract A-level students demands, however many skills and self-development ability. Primarily A-level students must develop self-organization skills which would help students plan their study activities beforehand. They should start with developing time management skills by working out study schedules for assigned essays and coursework activities, research works and presentations. Such study schedules should be written for each week in order to not miss most important activities, be prepared for future tasks and assignments and what is the most importantly, avoid nightmares just before the exams or term papers submission. The second core skill for self-organization is analytical approach to each amount of new knowledge. While general secondary education study suggests a teachers primary role to present and explain new topic A-level study usually requires students primary understanding and interpreting new knowledge with their own expertise and analysis. Thus, analytical approach requires good research skills and reading skills. A-level students should research new topics rather than perceive them from their teachers viewpoint. It is clear A-level students are often assigned with research works and written research papers. Research skills would be also helpful to work on new topics more independently and, therefore to develop the ability which is very important for future life, self-assessment and self-determination in study and social life as well. Research skills are best developed during assignments completion and future tasks determination. So even if an A-level student is assigned to write a term paper on the given topic and resources the freedom of research will still remain and would even give an extra higher level for the term paper assigned. Research may help determine the choice of future subjects to study and even future interests and professions because the huge amount of knowledge and information available in modern technologically developed world would often find students confused and lost. The last but not least skill demanded for A-level students is free time activities scheduling. Here time management skill would be necessary. While planning study schedule students should bear in mind that success in academic study depends on good knowledge, self-organization, responsibility and active social life as well!
